So Obsessed... (13)

It's time for another update on my obsessions!!  Between the Broke and Bookish Secret Santa and the On the Same Page Secret Sister Project, it's got me thinking about stuff I like, stuff my friends like, and my changing obsessions in general.  So I decided to start telling you guys what my obsessions are when I get them.

Maggie Stiefvater

  • I said on my last Obsessions post that I was going to meet Maggie Stiefvater, and I DID!!  It was everything I was hoping it would be.  Maggie told this hilarious story of her life, complete with chapter titles.  I loved all her stories of growing up being the non-happy girl, living on pasta for many years, owning fainting goats, and stories from her portrait painting days.   Seriously, her cat paintings are on point.
  • I love going to these author signings with my book club.  It makes me feel all book cluby and stuff.  So hopefully more authors will come to Pittsburgh in the future!!  I mean, Rainbow Rowell and Maggie Stiefvater in ONE month!!!  That's pretty promising!
  • Also my book club girls (and me) have convinced Cassi to come to book club... and I hope she keeps coming and having so much fun with us!!

Supergirl

  • I watched it (the first episode)!!  And what did I think: I really don't know.  Part of me wants to like it so bad because I love a woman superhero (although she's not superwoman, she's superGIRL).  But WHY does she have to be clumsy??  Ughhh, I'm sorry but I can't help but be annoyed.  The girl is clumsy at work and clumsy while fighting crime.  And it just makes me feel the weakness in it.  Maybe it's Twilight that killed the clumsy factor for me, but you show a girl being clumsy and I auto-hate her and think she's weak or you're trying to make her weak because she's a girl.
  • I thought the first episode was nice, and the actress who plays Supergirl is really fun.... but I also felt as though it was a bit of info-dump.  BAM- here's her whole backstory BAM- here's the guy who's crushing on her BAM- here's the guy that's crushing on her TELLING her that he's crushing on her BAM- here's the new love interest BAM- here's the super-villain and her whole network of minions.
  • I just didn't think it was necessary for SO much to come out in that one episode.  Especially the love interest and crush aspect.  Didn't it take like YEARS for Lois to know Clark was crushing on her?
  • I have DVR'd the next episodes... has anyone watched them and liked them?

Dawson's Creek (College Years)

  • So I was flipping around channels on my TV and I ran across a channel showing a few episodes of Dawson's Creek.  I haven't watched any in a while, so I thought why not??  After 2 episodes I was breaking out my DVD box set of the entire series to do a college years-only rewatch.
  • So why only the college years??  I guess because there's LESS of Dawson.  Even though he is supposed to be the main dude, I just never liked him.  It's kind of weird because I like James Van Der Beek in other things, but as Dawson... BLAH!!  Anyway, Dawson is safely away (for the most part) filming movies and being a douche, so college years I decided to watch.  Also, I really felt the need to watch the final episode so I could see my OTP get together once and for all.... and cry, that last episode is SO sad.
  • Watching it (and live tweeting my reactions) made me remember how awesome and silly that show was.  Those kids take themselves so damn seriously.  And they always have to do the right thing in the end.  It's definitely a little corny, but still.... it's nostalgic for me.
  • So thoughts: I always thought Jen should have died from something more impactful in the finale.  I mean, heart condition was way too tame.  Also, I thought it very odd that Jack goes to the hospital with his boyfriend to get tested and they never once say the word HIV or AIDS... but clearly they are there for that particular test.  Were we still not able to talk about that stuff in 2003??

Secret Santas and Sisters Galore

  • I'm very much loving this new round of OTSP Secret Sister!!  I'm having the best time getting to know BOTH my sisters.  The one I'm sending to sent me something... which I want to be like "NO!!!  I'm supposed to send to you!!!"  But then also I'm like all teary eyed because it was SO sweet!!
  • The sister who is sending to me is AMAZING!!  She's sent me the coolest packages!  I feel like she always comes up with really adorable themes (pink 90's nostalgia, fairy tales, and fall so far) and she just GETS me so well.  I'll be sad to give her up in a few months.  Some of the awesome things she bought me are pictured above^^ and WOW... I love it all.  Steelers stuff?!?!?  A Funko Doll!?!?  She's too cool!
  • I also have 2 Secret Santa's (or as my book club calls it Pollyanna) to shop for.  I'm doing the Broke and Bookish Secret Santa (thanks Jamie for putting it together) again, because YAY!!!  It's how I've met a ton of cool blogger friends!!!  (Shoutout to Heather, Kristin, and Danielle).  My book club also does a Secret Santa/Pollyanna as well.  So I will be buying for one of those crazy gals.
  • That's a lot of things to think of to buy over the next few weeks.  And I really try to get things that I think the people will truly like!!  It's so much pressure!!! And so much fun!!!  Now off to Etsy to find some things :)

Books and a Reading Slump

  • I'm very much in a book slump right now.  I've been living in denial, but I just can't get into reading at the moment and it makes me really sad.  I feel like I'm screwing myself out of reading all the books that I want to read by feeling so blah about reading.  I don't know why this is happening, but here I am 1 month and NO new books finished!!  NONE! :(
  • I thought when Winter came out last week (and I immediately went out and bought it), it would be the book to get me over this.... but I've read around 150 pages and I still don't feel the urge to read.  This really sucks you guys!!
  • How do you get over your slumps?

I want to talk to you guys.  What are your recent obsessions??  Anything on Netflix that has got you hooked?  Any recent series binges?  Are you doing any secret santas this year?  Any idea about how to get me out of this slump?

    1. Book club seriously saved my life. If I hadn't found them, I feel like I would still be in that really dark place I was in before they came along. Hopefully my reading slump will end soon bc I'm drowning in books!!!!

  2. It's been a while since I watched the Supergirl premiere (I ended up seeing the leaked version a few months ago), but I remember liking it more than I expected to. I feel like they dumped the whole Devil Wears Pradaishness of the beginning pretty quickly and I'm interested in the dynamic between Kara and her sister. I do think the info dumping was a bit much and I'm sort of sick of female superhero = inexperienced, but male superhero = total bad ass, but I'm hoping they'll get over that trope in the 2nd episode.

I almost never watch the college years of Dawson's Creek. I think the lack of Dawson opened the way for more of the characters to get on my nerves. Plus, Audrey was there. OTOH the finale is still my favorite finale of any show. It was so tragic in the best way possible. And I loved the emotional impact of everyone preparing for Jen's death. Plus, my OTP ends up together! That never happens.

    1. Totally agree!! Female superhero= needs to find her way and start from scratch... the males= not so much. It's pretty sad. And Audrey was the absolute worst... wait no, I think I may have hated Andi a little bit more. Either way, yuck!!! But I kind of did love to hate Audrey. And yay to the OTP at the end!! Finally a series who got it right!

  3. I feel like I have so many comments to make after reading this post! I always wished I could find a group of people to be in a book club with. My two best friends and I started an online one but we're all in different states so it's not the same as going out to events together. Re: Supergirl! I really like Melissa Benoist as Supergirl. I think she's playing a really loyal adaptation of the character to the Kara Zor-El of the comics. I think she's a little clumsy because she's just so enthusiastic about everything that she gets over-excited. I'm hoping that her clumsiness as Supergirl will slow down as the season progresses but I I think they're just trying to convey that she's a new and inexperienced hero. I'm also not a huge fan of long origin stories but I'm glad they got it out of the way in the first episode so they could shift the focus for the rest of the season. I'm up to episode 3 and I think it's going to be good! I'm also really glad that we met each other during the Secret Santa last year! I'm skipping this year because I'm so busy with wedding stuff but I'm definitely planning on participating next year! And I'm sorry about your reading slump! Sometimes it's best to not force it and when you've taken a little hiatus you'll feel great about reading again. Sometimes I'll also re-read Harry Potter because I'm guaranteed to love it and feel excited about it!

    1. I like Melissa Benoist as Supergirl too. She's really cute and fun. I didn't read the comics, so I'm not sure what Supergirl is supposed to be like, but I'm hoping that she'll become more kick ass and less timid. My reading slump sucks so bad. I am reading HP to my son at night and having no problems with that... maybe I'll just read ahead of what I'm reading to him and that will fix it??? I'm going to try, thank you!!

  4. So many fun things!!! I haven't seen Supergirl, but I do NOT like that she's clumsy! I mean, I get that maybe it makes them a little more accessible or easier to relate to, but sometimes I do feel like it just makes them look weak. However, I can't really judge until I've seen... I dunno. Hopefully you get to watch more and it turns out to really be a good series!

Getting to do all the Secret Santa swaps is one of my favorite things about this time of year! I participate in TBTB one, but I also have a group of bloggers who I do one with. It's always fun picking out things and creating packages! And then you get stuff in the mail, which I ALWAYS love! Looks like your OTSPSSS sent you some really sweet goodies! I didn't participate this time around, but am debating signing up again for the next round!

And reading slumps... don't get me started. I feel like I've been in one for half the year. It's times like those when I just give up on reading and do something else. Watch an entire series on Netflix. Do crafts. Anything that's not reading. I always find my way back to it! Although, sometimes, I find switching up WHAT I'm reading really helps. Maybe going back to an old favorite or grabbing a trashy romance novel... those can sometimes cleanse my reading palate and get me back on track with my usual reading.

  5. I have watched every episode of supergirl so far, and I really like it. I wasn't sure how it would feel about it. I love Calista Flockhart as the bitchy boss! I was a huge fan of Ally McBeal and I have really missed her, this is a great role for her and I wasn't sure who Supergirl was but she played Marley in Glee, correct? I like her she's cute. I think the episodes do get better. But remember it is a show about a superhero so how real can it feel? It's cute and fun, that's what is important.

  6. HEY... I got a shout out! Book club was definitely fun. You all are very sweet and I don't really scare very easily when it comes to meeting nice people who like talking about books. I plan to keep going. If I can.

I need to watch Supergirl. It looks great. I just never watch TV in real time and I don't think it's on Hulu which is my first thought when I want to watch current shows so if I have to go out of my way to watch it then I'll just go with something else. Lately I've been watching The Last Man on Earth and Agents of Shield. I like where they're going with the Inhumans.

Bummer about the book slump. Winter is so good but if it's not working maybe try a reread. That's what usually gets me out of my funk, reading an old favorite or something that I loved the first time. It tends to rekindle my love of reading if I devote time to something I know I love. And when you do finish Winter we must chat about it!
