Share the Love (6)

Inspired by THIS post at Paperfury.com, I decided I'm going to start sharing things in the book blogging community.  Maybe it'll be some awesome post or new feature a blogger has put together, maybe it'll be a blog that I want to share with you all.  All I know is I want this community to be a better, nicer, happier, more helpful place, and I'm going to do my part to spread the LOVE.

Usually when I do these Share the Love posts, I share 5 blogs (and I'm still going to do that in the future)... today I decided to do something a little different.  In the spirit of spreading the love, I've been thinking about what else I can do besides one post every so often that, let's be honest, is only going to reach a limited amount of people.

So I started thinking about my blog viewing and social media habits and how I could help in that way.  And what I found are super easy things I could do to make a small difference.  The thing is though, if we all do them, it will make a BIG difference.  It's weird because for the last 4 years I gave such little thought to doing stuff like this, but because of the Paperfury post, I realized if I could do things like the list below (which take basically zero time), and if it was going to help in some small way, I was going to do it.

So these are the goals I've set for myself to do whenever I visit these sites (and really now it's just become habit):

1.  Twitter

  • When I'm on Twitter, I retweet links of other bloggers (and authors and publishers).  I'm not constantly on Twitter, but when I am, I've made it my goal to retweet at least two links before I move on.
  • If you put all of our Twitter followers together, that's a hell of a big reach.  So why not help each other out??  I see a lot of people tweeting their links to their blog posts, but rarely do I see those links getting retweets.  So why not make it a goal to retweet other people's links?

2.  Goodreads

  • The more likes you have on a review, the more visible it will be on the book's main page.  So when I go on Goodreads-- before I update my reading status or look up the book I'm thinking of-- I try to like a few of the reviews that show up on my homepage.

3.  Pinterest

  • Pinning- This takes a tad longer, and I rarely remember to do it, but I'm trying to do better.  So, if I'm on my computer reading an interesting post, I try to remember to Pin it on Pinterest.

4.  Instagram

  • Liking Bookstagram pics.  Every time I post a picture, I try to go and like at least 10 pictures under the Bookstagram or Booknerd or some other bookish tag.  That's not including liking people I follow Instagram pics.  I also try to ReGram if someone is doing something like creating a challenge that needs participants... even if I'm not going to participate, it can't hurt to get the word out.

5.  Blogging

  • Visiting back people that visit me.  This is a thing that I've tried to do since I started blogging.  There have been times I haven't been AS good at doing this, but I solidly try to do it now.
  • I also do things like: If I put one of my posts on Saturday Situation or some other link-up, I try to visit and comment on at least 5 blogs listed there.  I just think that's courteous.
  • I've also made it my goal to find at least 1 new blog a week to follow.  Since there's been some turnover on my blogroll, I thought it would be nice to update and see what some of the newbies are up to.

I'm in no way saying I'm a Saint, or I'm better than anybody, or that I want a pat on the back because I do these things.  I'm just sharing this in hopes that other people will Pay it Forward.  If we can all try to do our small part, just think of how much bigger and better we can make this little community!!  There's so much negativity on the Internet anymore, let's help each other out instead of putting each other down.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to my U.S. peeps :)

  1. Love all these!! I have always tried to make it a point to share good stuff I find on Twitter and sometimes I do better with it than others. I used to be such a good commenter but in the past couple years I've basically gone wayyyy down. This is probably the first comment I have left in months EEEEP. BUT I do try to at least share posts that I normally would have commented on. I think another thing I would add to this list that's super easy that I try to do is TELL PEOPLE WHEN YOU READ A BOOK BECAUSE OF THEM! I loooove knowing this and it always makes my day. So even if it was a book that was on my radar and I was already planning to read it, I still like to tell someone if their review or tweets about a book is what made me bump it up! I think sometimes it's easy to feel like you are just recommending stuff into this crowded room and nobody hears you but people do and it's nice to hear when someone takes your recs!

I don't spend as much time looking at other people's stuff on Goodreads sadly bc I mostly just get on there to catalog my own books and reading BUT I LOVE your idea of taking the time to read through some reviews of books I might have just read and love and giving the ones I think are great a like to boost them up there!

    1. That is such a good idea!! I didn't even think of it, but I love it when people tell me they read (and loved) a book because of me. I will definitely start doing that as well :) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!! It's always nice to hear from you!

  3. This is such a great post!! I need to remember to do that more on twitter. I am not on there a lot and not good on there in general but I need to retweet more!! Also I want to be better at liking reviews on Goodreads.

  4. Great ideas! I didn't know that about Goodreads reviews. I will start liking reviews from now on. And retweeting other bloggers posts on Twitter is such a no brainer. I am going to start doing that too. :)

  5. This is great! I definitely love chatting and supporting fellow bloggers on Twitter and Instagram. It makes me feel like part of the community and I hope other people feel the same. I do however need to be better about commenting back and visiting blogs for people who visited mine. I think in light of some recent drama we should be focusing on these kind of things about the blogosphere because it can be so positive. Awesome idea! You're fantastic!

    1. Thanks sweetie!! Cait is the one who inspired me to do this... I love how in a sea of negativity, there's always that one person who can make you see that there's still good, there's still people who care. I'm not the most positive person, so I have to set goals if I'm going to remember do stuff like this on the regular. I almost didn't post it because I was afraid it come off preachy or like "this is what you should be doing" and that wasn't my intention. But I decided I had to share bc seriously if we all do a little bit, it can turn into something big :)

  6. Great post! I am trying to RT more things that I find on Twitter- posts that I've read and enjoyed, etc. I should try and it more often though. I always visit back blogs that post on mine, because it's fun to spread the love and get to know bloggers. It's not the same to JUST comment on the post they wrote on because they might not see it, and I feel like sure, I'm writing them back, but I'm not really checking out and supporting what they are doing too. But that's just me! I know it's hard to do, so it's not the easiest for everyone. Some of your other ideas are great ways to help though!

  7. THIS IS SO WONDERFUL. <3 Thank you for linking to my post and I'm so glad it inspired you! YOU'RE INSPIRING ME. XD I love what you're doing on twitter and goodreads and insagram. That is so wonderful. It's my goal to do more on instagram for sure *nods* And also to remember to save more posts for my monthly wrap-ups to share. It means SUCH A LOT to a blogger to have their work appreciated and it's the nicest thing to do!! *flails*

  8. Hi Michelle! I think it's so wonderful and admirable that you're taking such a thoughtful approach to helping out other bloggers, bookstagramers, etc.! The tips really are rather easy (such as retweeting two links per day) but I think it's easy to just forget about the small ways we can help each other out. Great post!

    1. It is SO easy to forget!! I never even gave it much thought at all until recently... but it really is the smallest things that can make a difference.

  9. I actually found you through your linkup on The Saturday Situation. What I currently do: Try to visit & comment back / visit other links when I link up / put a few of my favorite posts from the week in my Sunday Summary.

Thanks for suggestions of additional things I can do.

  10. These are all fantastic ideas. I like that you chose simple ways to spread the love - they don't take you a ton of time or effort (especially the retweeting or liking on Goodreads ones), but they make a lot of impact if you do them consistently!

  11. I absolutely LOVE this idea! I always try to comment back when people comment on my blog, but sometimes I'm not as good about other things. Especially retweeting links and Pinterest- I'd really like to do those more often!
