A while ago I wrote a post about my favorite underrated 80's movies, and I followed it up with a post on my favorite underrated 90's movies. I love being nostalgic so much that I decided to now share with you my favorite movies from the 2000's decade (mostly the early part of it).
So here you have it--- My favorite movies from the years where low-rise flared jeans, body glitter, tube tops, trucker hats, velour tracksuits, and Abercrombie & Fitch were the bomb.
Movies from the 2000's that you just gotta see:
- Starring: Devon Sawa, Jaime King, Jason Segel
- Cool Factor: Dude from Pete & Pete is on it, plus the scariest hair-doll I've ever seen
- Starring: Jerry O'Connell, Shannon Elizabeth
- Cool Factor: Some really gross humor, Jerry O'Connell in his prime
- Starring: Shane West, James Franko
- Cool Factor: It's GIA from Full House!! Plus, Aaron Paul plays a weirdo/stoner dude.
- Starring: Breckin Meyer, Seann William Scott, Amy Smart
- Cool Factor: Oh jeez there are SO many!!! Tom Green (remember him??) at the peak of his weirdness (and probably the only truly funny part he ever played), remember geeky DJ Qualls?? This is where he got his start. "It's not cheating if you're in a different area code" (PS-- this is coming to Netflix in September!! So if you haven't seen it, be on the lookout!!)
Out Cold- I might be the only person who knows about this movie, but OMG LOVED!!! It's about an indie ski resort that's about to get bought by a big corporation... this does not go over well with the kooky staff.
- Starring: Jason London, Zach Galifianakis
- Cool Factor: Many LOL moments, "Island in the Sun" by Weezer, pants-less skiing is a thing that happens often.
- Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Tara Reid, Kal Penn
- Cool Factor: Ryan freaking Reynolds. "Write that down", the nastiest dog semen scene in cinematic history, Aaron Paul playing a random wasted guy again, so many quotable lines.
- Starring: Scott Mechlowciz, Michelle Trachtenberg
- Cool Factor: The Worst Twins in the history of twins, "Scotty Doesn't Know", Absinthe scene.
- Starring: Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn
- Cool Factor: What's not cool about this movie?? "You're my boy Blue", Will Ferrell's wedding song, Jeremy Piven playing the most annoying dean ever (Cheeeeese!), Earmuffs, & Stifler makes an appearance.
Juno- A super mature 16-year-old gets pregnant by her best friend and decides to give the baby up for adoption.
- Starring: Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner
- Cool Factor: Breakout roles for both Ellen Page and Michael Cera, awesome soundtrack, track boys in insanely short shorts.
- Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds
- Cool Factor: Filmed in Pittsburgh at KENNYWOOD (the coolest old-school amusement park around), a 1980's setting!!
- Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Chloe Grace Moretz
- Cool Factor: Any movie with JGL is cool in my book (except Don Jon, BLAH!!), I love that it's the GIRL who can't commit, a song and dance sequence.
- Starring: James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, Kate Bosworth
- Cool Factor: Dawson playing a very UN-Dawson-like character (and Jessica Biel being very UN-Mary-like as well), zero likable characters, Sex, Drugs, & College Parties :)
Frequency- This is one of my all-time favs. A HAM radio connects a father and son across 30 years in NY.
- Starring: Jim Caviezel, Dennis Quaid
- Cool Factor: A serial killer murder/mystery, BASEBALL, Dennis Quaid isn't completely terrible as an actor
- Starring: Ryan Phillipe, Rachel Leigh Cook, Claire Forlani
- Cool Factor: Computer geeks!! The end of the Ryan Phillipe, Rachel Leigh Cook era :(
- Starring: Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale
- Cool Factor: Magic!! Tesla!! A twist that I didn't even come close to guessing.
- Starring: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson
- Cool Factor: Another M. Night Shyamalan masterpiece. Beautiful cinematography. Comic books.
Valentine- A horror/thriller about a killer exacting revenge on his high school tormentors.
- Starring: Denise Richards, David Boreanaz, Katherine Heigl
- Cool Factor: We all need a little cheesy slasher film in our lives, and this was one of my favorites.
- Starring: Lori Heuring, Susan Ward
- Cool Factor: Rufus Humfrey (from Gossip Girl) is the crush-worthy guy.
- Starring: James Marsden, Lena Headey, Norman Reedus
- Cool Factor: Ummm-- Joshua Jackson!!!
- Starring: Erika Christensen, Jesse Bradford
- Cool Factor: I stand by my assertion that Erika Christensen plays the scariest/creepiest stalker.
Butterfly Effect- An interesting time-bending movie about a boy who has suffered from blackouts for most of his life and finds when he reads a childhood journal he can go back and change past events.
- Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart
- Cool Factor: Flashback 80's scenes & Ashton Kutcher is in an actual serious movie!
- Starring: Richard Gere, David Eisenberg, Laura Linney
- Cool Factor: This movie was filmed in Pittsburgh and Kittanning, PA and a few of my college friends were extras.
- Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford
- Cool Factor: Ouija board!!
- Starring: Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr., Penelope Cruz
- Cool Factor: LOVE this psychological thriller... totally messed with my head!
- Starring: Shane West, Mandy Moore
- Cool Factor: It's a Nicholas Sparks book & a total sobfest. Poetry!! The movie was filmed in the same town as Dawson's Creek.
- Starring: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas, Benicio Del Toro
- Cool Factor: Erika Christensen does it again with the OMG character, and I'll never look at plastic toys the same way again.
- Starring: Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd
- Cool Factor: This one of my fave movies/books of EVER!! I've probably watched it 999 times. Also, anytime Sally Field shows up in a movie it's cooler.
- Starring: Kristen Stewart, Elizabeth Perkins, Michael Angarano
- Cool Factor: This is a movie made from one of my fave books EVER!! Reading Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson changed my life. Also, this was Kristen Stewart's breakout role.
My other (more obvious) favorites:
Duets, Bring It On, Wall-E, Gladiator, Almost Famous, Harry Potter movies, X-Men, Mean Girls, Meet the Parents, American Pie 2, The Hangover, Freaky Friday, Legally Blonde, 13 Going On 30, Erin Brockovich, American Psycho, I Am Sam
Tell Me:
What are your favorite movies from the 2000's?? Do you like any of mine? Any I'm missing that I just gotta see?
So many of these are my favorites! My friend group was OBSESSED with Eurotrip in high school. We watched it almost every day! And Old School will always have a special place in my heart! Plus Juno<3, 500 Days of Summer obviously and The Butterfly Effect! I loved them all!
ReplyDeleteI love movies that me and my friends watched over and over. For me it was Showgirls (hahaha), Titanic, and American Pie 2.
DeleteOh man I don't know where to start!! Love all teh road trip movies. Old School and Van Wilder were hysterical. I loved Juno and me and my husband went as them for Halloween one year. 500 Days of summer is a favorite of ours too. Gah they are all so good!
ReplyDeleteRoad trip movies really are the best!! AND OMG I freaking love that you went as Juno and Paulie for Halloween!!! Did your husband wear the short shorts??????
DeleteAwesome post! So many old favorites on this list. I can't believe that I haven't watched Speak yet. I need to change that soon. I used to be obsessed with Ryan Phillippe. Ha!
ReplyDeleteRyan Philippe!!! He was such a hottie. And YES to Speak. I definitely rec it!
DeleteOh my gosh, you have so many good ones on here! I don't know which ones to talk about!! First off, Frequency is amazing. That's one of my faves too. Fantastic choice! I just love so many of these. A Walk to Remember, Where the Heart is, Swimfan, Unbreakable, Road Trip, Euro Trip, Adventureland, Juno, Gothika, What LIes Beneath, The Mothman Prophecies, 500 Days of Summer, and Old School. Okay I think I listed them all. Haha. I haven't seen any of the other ones. Gosh you're list is just so great! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm SO happy someone else loves Frequency!! It's definitely an underrated movie.
DeleteThanks for sharing! I do love these type of posts. I know MOST of these but haven't actually seen a lot of them. I have seen Old School though. From your list, I've also seen and LOVED Juno, A Walk to Remember, and Speak.
ReplyDelete-Lauren
Juno is perfection isn't it??? I could watch it everyday and never get sick of it.
DeleteGreat list. I would add sweet Home Alabama- always had a soft spot for that movie. 500 Days of Summer is a great choice too. Bring It On ws pretty good too. The Bourne movies are favorites of mine.
ReplyDeleteSweet Home Alabama was cute. I still like to say "You have a baby.... in a bar." all the time.
DeleteExcellent! I love some of these movies and quite a few are on my to-watch list. I still can't believe I haven't seen Swimfan because when it first came out I was obsessed with the hot actor in it
ReplyDeleteSwimfan!! It's so creepy. I loved the guy actor in it in Bring it On. He was adorable!
DeleteOmg I didn't know there was a movie of Speak!! I haven't read the book yet, but I've been meaning to do that too. ;D And I looooove The Prestige! :O I didn't even realise it was a 90s movie though, I thought it was made in the 2000s or something.😂 BUT THAT MOVIE IS JUST THE BEST ABSOLUTELY AHH!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Prestige was a 2000's movie LOL. And you must watch Speak!! It's really good for a TV movie.
DeleteOh man! So many great movies here! Gossip! That was when I first fell in love with Norman Reedus! And The Prestige and Unbreakable are two more that I love. I remember having to re-watch both immediately to look for clues to the endings!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even realize it was The Walking Dead dude in Gossip!!! Good call. I love when I discover stuff like that :) I'm so glad you liked The Prestige!! I feel like I can never find anyone who's even heard of it!
DeleteThere are so many great movies on this list (I think I have seen Juno 20x!!! A cousin once got me the script too, knowing how obsessed I was). And The Prestige! There's a bunch on this list I still haven't seen despite being big movies--Road Trip, etc. so I will definitely have to chek these out. I am going to bookmark this for later. Thank you so much for this post, Michelle.
ReplyDeleteWoooo Juno!!! I was obsessed with it too. That's so cool that you got a script!! And OMG The Prestige blew me away. It's so underrated!
DeleteLOVE this list! I am not a huge movie person, but still, some of these are my faves! Juno is one I cannot get enough of! And OMG Scotty Doesn't Know is now currently stuck in my head and will be for months probably, so I am blaming you a LOT right now hahha. I watched Swimfan with some people in college, and we were mostly just mad at all the swimming inaccuracies ;) Love 500 Days of Summer too! Going to cry just thinking about A Walk to Remember. SOBS.
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorites I think are those above (not Swimfan though bwhaha) and Mean Girls for sure. And 13 Going on 30, that was a great one! And Remember the Titans may be my all time favorite non-bookish movie (fine, second to maybe D2: The Mighty Ducks, but that isn't a 2000s haha) SUCH a fun post!!
Oh man, I remember so many of these from high school and college (yes I'm old)! I love love love Whatever It Takes, Valentine and The In Crowd (I was just thinking about this one a few days ago!)!!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen Get Over It? I think that one is so underrated! ♥ And I love/d Aquamarine, She's the Man, Saved!, Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen, Orange County and John Tucker Must Die!
Somehow I have NOT seen Get Over It!!! That is SO odd because I feel like I was all about the teen movies in 2001. John Tucker Must Die was kind of cool... mostly bc of the dude from Desperate Housewives being hot :)
DeleteOH MY GOD YES TO ALL OF THESE (well, most, there are maybe 2 I haven't seen on this list). BUT YES. This is so nostalgic hahah
ReplyDeleteMolly @ Molly's Book Nook
I'm alllllll about the notsalgia!! There's nothing like 90's/early 2000's for me :)
DeleteWhat Lies Beneath was so scary!!!! I haven't watched it since I saw it in theaters hahaha. On that same note, I liked The Skeleton Key too but again, haven't watched it since. Yesssss A Walk To Remember! That was the first time my high school friends and I really bonded outside of school; we saw that and had a sleepover and wrote our own lists like Jamie lol. Plus Shane West, yum. Bring It On, Gladiator, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Freaky Friday, Wall-E, yes yes yes!! Some of my other 2000s favorites are The Wedding Planner, What A Girl Wants, Coyote Ugly, A Cinderella Story and Get Over It (which is super hilarious and stars Ben Foster and Kiersten Dunst).
ReplyDeleteHow could I forget Coyote Ugly???? I loved that and the Leanne Rimes soundtrack! Cinderella Story bc Hillary Duff & Chad Michael Murray :) I LOVE Ben Foster so how have I not seen Get Over It??
DeleteI love visiting sites in my free time. I have visited many sites but did not find any site more efficient than yours. Thanks for the nudge! la casa de papel saison 3 streaming
