December = Catch Up Month

A few weeks ago I told you guys about how I was dreading the end of the year because it means FAILED GOODREADS CHALLENGE & me not reading a bunch of books that I really wanted to read this year.

I talked to my friend Cassi about it (sidenote: she's been inspiring a lot of my posts lately.... thanks Cassi!!), and she told me she usually spends December catching up on books she didn't get to during the year.  It's a pretty perfect month to do that because so few books are released in December-- so there's not as much NEWNESS distraction.

So I've made a small list of the books I'm most sad about passing over this year.  I kept the list short so it's do-able... I'm always setting myself up to fail because my book hunger is always bigger than my book reading ability.

  • Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay- So it's an older book, but I swear every year I say THIS is the year I'll read this book and every year I put it off until next year.  I am reading this this month!!

  • The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #4) by Maggie Stiefvater- Yes I really really really need to read this and finish the series.  Somehow I've managed to avoid all spoilers, and I'm just beyond ready to find out what happens.  Also, as I'm a super terrible mood reader-- I think I'm actually in the MOOD for this book!! Finally!!

  • Replica (#1) by Lauren Oliver- It didn't come out THAT long ago, but I love Lauren Oliver and was REALLY REALLY hyped on this book all year long.

  • What Light by Jay Asher- Another newer book, but another book I've had in my possession for a really long time and have been SO EXCITED to read.  Also, it involves a Christmas tree farm, so I'd say it's perfect for the season.

  • The Amateurs (#1) by Sara Shepard- Another recent release, but UGHHH MUST READ!!!  Love Sara Shepard and have been missing her in my life.

Those are the books I'm hoping to read this month to "catch up" on my 2016 TBR.  Honestly, I'll never catch up, but these are the ones I'd be super disappointed if I didn't finish before the year is out.

Have you read any of these?  What do you think I should read first?  What books are you really hoping to read before 2017?

  1. I love the idea of catching up this month! I hope you get to a lot of these. I can't wait to see what you think of The Sea of Tranquility. I loved it! I enjoyed The Cursed Child. I hope you do too! Happy December reading.

    1. I'm super excited to finish The Cursed Child. I don't know why I've waited SOOOO long. I mean, I knew I didn't want to read it in August... but I think October would've been a safe enough distance away. Anyhow, I'm definitely reading it soon!! And OMG I think The Sea of Tranquility will a be a "me" book. I just have a feeling.

  2. I really enjoyed The Sea of Tranquility. I was no as much of a fan of Replica though which was super disappointing. I have so many books I want to get to this month and I am sure I will fail lol. Good luck getting these in!

    1. I've heard mixed things about Replica, but I have to try it because LAUREN OLIVER!! I'm sure I'll probably fail on this list as well (even though I made it short so I WOULDN'T fail).

  3. I totally get the hype needing to die down reason! That happens to me too unless I'm one of the firsts to read it. For now, I already have no interest in Carve the Mark because there were like 20 BookTube reviews for it all posted within a 3 day span.

    1. That is totally me!! Whenever I see a million reviews for a new book, I instantly shelve it. I don't think I'll ever enjoy reading what everyone else is reading.

  4. I really enjoyed The Amateurs and Replica! ALSO The Raven King was pretty great for me. HP & the Cursed Child was good for me too.. I know a lot of people felt mixed but I enjoyed it overall.

  5. Yes, you must read The Raven King. You must! You know what else you need to read... Winter. But seriously, I'm feel the same way with the end of the year. I'm going to try and read the books I put off the past few months. Replica is on my list and I still haven't read Cursed Child either but I'm not sure. I wish it was on audio.

    1. Haha if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have even had the idea to use December for catching up!! And I DO really need to read Winter. But now that I'm almost done with Heartless, I might not be in the mood for fairy tales for a while.

  6. Such a great idea! I am sad that I missed out on the Harry Potter reboot too. I hope you enjoy the new one. I am going to start at the beginning of the series and reread first. It has been an embarassingly long time since I have dusted off my Harry Potter's.

    1. I hope you love your HP reread!! I just did my first reread of the series last year. It was so fun to go back into that world and remember all the tiny details I forgot about... and see all the little clues that I missed when I didn't know what was going to happen. BUT I also saw a bunch of flaws and annoyances that didn't really bug me the first time around. I just finished the Cursed Child and it's definitely fun reading!!

  7. YES to the Amateurs (started out a little iffy for me then.... the twist!). While Raven King wasn't 100% what I hoped for, it was still good. Sea of Tranquility is fun of NA cliche (two damaged people yada yada) but still SO gripping -- once you start reading you aren't putting it down.
Enjoy and can't wait to hear your thoughts!

    1. I cannot wait to see if The Sea of Tranquility is as good for me as it has been for all my friends. I've been told to read it for years and can't believe I haven't done it yet!! Also, SO excited for The Raven King. I've heard mixed things, but gotta know how that series ends!!

  8. I definitely think you should start with The Sea of Tranquility!! It was really good! And Replica was a pretty quick read for me with a highly intriguing premise but it didn't deliver quite like I had hoped. But for whatever reason, I will always read Lauren Oliver's books. Lol. And Harry Potter. The hype was so big! If I didn't read it the day I got it, I probably wouldn't have finished it yet either. Lots of mixed fellings but ultimately, it's HARRY POTTER! I hope you enjoy whichever books you end up reading this month!

  9. I'd definitely make The Sea of Tranquility and The Raven King top priorities. If you do audio at all, both are good. :) I still need to read Replica, too, but I have the audio out from the library so hopefully soon. And I'm not sure I can bring myself to read The Cursed Child. :(

    1. I wonder how the Replica audio will be? Can you switch back and forth for between narrators? And yes, I am making The Sea of Tranquility my #1 priority this month!

  11. I love the idea of catching up during December! There are a bunch of new releases on my TBR from earlier this year that I didn't get around to, and I really want to read some of them. Good luck with yours! :)

  13. For me, December is 2 things for me:
    (1) Reading tons of Christmas stories.
    (2) Fitting in books I wasn't able to finished earlier in the year.

Using December to tie up the strings of my yearly list helps me feel a bit more accomplished and satisfied with my reading year. :)
