Synopsis:

GREAT. I’ve somehow found myself tangled up with a siren, a mermaid, and a homicidal wicked witch who once tried to strangle me to death. Way to go, Amber!

Amber Sand, legendary matchmaker, couldn’t be more surprised when her arch nemesis, Ivy, comes asking for her help. Ivy’s sister, Iris, is getting married, and Ivy wants to prove her sister is making a huge mistake. But as Amber looks into Iris's eyes, there doesn’t seem to be a problem—Iris has clearly found her match.

It seems happily ever after is in the cards, but when Iris seeks out a dangerous, life-altering spell, it’s up to Amber and Ivy to set aside their rivalry and save the day.

While Iris is willing to put everything on the line for love, Amber continues to wrestle with her own romantic future. Her boyfriend, Charlie, is still destined for another, and no matter how hard she clings to him, fear over their inevitable breakup shakes her belief system to the core.

Because the Fates are never wrong—right?

Crystal! We are so excited to have you back!!  We loved your first book and can’t wait to catch back up with you and Amber!

Thank you so much!

What 3 recent books would you recommend to our YA fans?

Three of my most recent reads that really stuck out are Satellite by Nick Lake, Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesa Zappia, and Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed. Each of these touched me in a different way, but they all featured brave, heartfelt storytelling that has stayed with me past “the end”.

What books/authors have most made an impact on you/inspired you to write?

I feel like every time I read a book, I’m always in awe of that author’s style and ability to craft a tale that’s so uniquely their own. Stories that weave magic into the everyday peak my interest more than anything else. Growing up, I was obsessed with Roald Dahl, because his stories always put seemingly ordinary characters in extraordinary circumstances. As an adult, some standout magical twist stories have included the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and My Lady Jane by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows.

Could you tell our readers a little bit about THE SWEETEST KIND OF FATE?

I’d love to! In this sequel to The Best Kind of Magic, magical matchmaker Amber Sand faces a new romantic quandary. The sister of her nemesis is in love with a mermaid, and is willing to go to dangerous lengths to be with her girlfriend. While Amber tries to keep her safe, her own relationship with Charlie is struggling, since every time she looks into his eyes, she sees another girl. Both of these journeys really challenge Amber’s beliefs in love and whether or not the Fates are always right.

Tell us your favorite quote from THE SWEETEST KIND OF FATE.

“Love is a surrender, giving in to the unknown and hoping for the best. But no matter how much we stumble and fall, we eventually find our way.”

What 3 hashtags would you most associate with THE SWEETEST KIND OF FATE? (Could be a word or phrase or anything that would instantly make you think of THE SWEETEST KIND OF FATE.)

Any and all things mermaid have been catching my eye!

Since the series is set in Chicago— can you tell us 3 cool must-see stops in Chicago that we might not know about?

The Chicago Riverwalk is not top secret, but it’s become a nice spot to go for a walk, grab a bite, or paddle a kayak, plus it offers really unique views of the city. I also love going to indie boutiques and bookstores, like the Book Cellar in Lincoln Square. But most importantly, there is a bakery in Lincoln Park called Sweet Mandy B’s; they make the most drool-worthy desserts ever, and was the inspiration for Amber’s favorite bakery, MarshmElla’s!

If you could have one magical talent, what would it be?

Teleportation! I’ve set a goal for myself to see more of the world, and that would help me do it much faster!

Hogwarts House (for you and/or your book characters)??

Hmm, I feel pretty confident that I’d fit in nicely in Hufflepuff, and I think sweet little Charlie would be there with me.  Amber and her bestie Amani are very brave and have no trouble standing up for what they believe in, so Gryffindor feels like their home. And Ivy, well, it may be cliché to place a villain in Slytherin, but hey, if the shoe fits!

If you had to pick one song to be the Theme Song for THE SWEETEST KIND OF FATE (or the series in general) – Which one would you pick?

When I first starting writing The Best Kind of Magic, Justin Timberlake’s “Not a Bad Thing” felt like the perfect song from Charlie to Amber. She is such an advocate for love, yet has such a hard time accepting it for herself. I think the themes of that song—allowing yourself to let good things into your life—apply to several of the characters in this story too.

What’s next for you?

I am currently scribbling away on several ideas that I hope to share soon!

With rainbows in my hair and stories in my head, I am a writer drawn to magic in the everyday world.

My debut novel, The Best Kind of Magic, arrives May 16, 2017 from Hyperion. Follow Amber Sand, a magical matchmaker who can actually see true love, as she takes off on a fun and romantic adventure toward happily ever after.
