Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green, David Levithan- Friday Rewind

Friday Rewind is an idea I got from Before The Blog which is/was a feature hosted by YA Litwit... and is super cool! The whole idea is that we've all been reading a lot longer than we've been blogging, so why not pull out one of those old books and feature it?? It's a way to rediscover books from our past...

My Choice This Week Is:
By: John Green & David Levithan

  • Why did you choose this book? I chose this book because I am about to read Looking For Alaska, so I wanted to revisit some John Green goodness :)
  • When did you read this book? June 2011
  • Who would you recommend this book to? Obviously fans of John Green and David Levithan first off.  Also if you liked How to Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford or Party by Tom Leveen (not really sure why those books go with this one, they just have that same feel to me).

  • Goodreads Synopsis:

One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, two teens—both named Will Grayson—are about to cross paths. As their worlds collide and intertwine, the Will Graysons find their lives going in new and unexpected directions, building toward romantic turns-of-heart and the epic production of history’s most fabulous high school musical.

Hilarious, poignant, and deeply insightful, John Green and David Levithan’s collaborative novel is brimming with a double helping of the heart and humor that have won both of them legions of faithful fans.

    My Thoughts:

Will Grayson is the straight best friend of the largest gayest boy, possibly ever.  Tiny Cooper is hell-bent on getting his fabulous autobiographical play up and running, even if it means overlooking his pal.  Meanwhile another Will Grayson is depressed and lonely.  He is gay but hasn't told anyone, least of all his "friend" Maura.  The one bright spot he has is his online relationship with Issac.  When Will goes to meet Issac, the location he's given turns out to be a porn shop.... and the only other person there is some other guy named Will Grayson.  WTF?

Ok so this book was definitely something different for me, and I am now realizing that I am NEVER going to be able to explain this right, but I'll try...  I really read this book entirely too fast and wished I could've slowed down and took it in better.  Also I wouldn't have minded the book being about 50 pages longer.  I got into the Will's worlds and wanted to know more!

Now we get to Tiny.  He was a show-stopper.  He was so lovable, and even though I kept thinking that maybe he was being portrayed a little over-the-top stereotypical, it somehow made sense.  Tiny was the glue for everyone in the book, and it was surprising considering he came off really selfish in the beginning.... but without Tiny, there is no happiness, and that I loved!!

The most powerful part in the book was the Maura/Will #2 part.  What she does to her Will, broke my heart!!  It was a cruel thing to do and thank goodness he didn't hurt himself over it... because jeez who wouldn't be shook by something like that??

This is definitely not your typical John Green book.  At least for me it wasn't.  It had a lot of emotion at times, but I didn't feel like it really went as deep and Green's books usually go.  It was more just a book about quirky-cool people and friendship.  I think it would've been better as a short story honestly.  I liked large parts of it, but I still didn't quite "get it".

Overall: It was an easy read and funny at times.  The characters are memorable and will stick with you for a long time.  It's totally worth giving it a shot, but it's not going to be for everyone.

    1. I appreciate you, Tiny Cooper! (or something along those lines, it's been a while). I would love to read more books with Tiny. The other characters? Eh, whatever.

You're right, this is definitely not everybody's cup of tea. I quite enjoyed it myself, but I think my view is colored by the fact that my copy is the audio book and OMG the singing! It's awful and rib cracking funny at the same time. It's like those musical episodes in some TV shows, I just love it so much more for its awkwardness.

      1. I definitely loved that Tiny was the center... I could NOT imagine listening to this on audio!! I do all my audio in the car so I would probably look insane driving around listening to Tiny's musical :) Although I'm sure I would be thoroughly entertained!
