Top Ten Most Unique Books I've Read
1. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger- This one is unique because it's about being able to time travel, but having NO control of when it will happen or where you will go. Scary, sad, and totally unique.
2. Tease by Amanda Maciel- It seems like a lot of people aren't liking this book... but not me :) I love that this shows the view of the bully in a suicide incident. We always see stories from the victim POV. Here we get to see what it's like from the other side... and maybe that's what makes people uncomfortable about this book.
3. This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers- A truly unique Zombie book. This is about a girl facing apocalypse who DOESN'T want to live. WHAT??? She's depressed and suicidal and just waiting for the end to come. All other apocalypse books I've read are about people who desperately want to live.
4. Uses for Boys by Erica Lorraine Scheidt- This one is unique because of the bravery of this book. This book was not afraid to go places that most books won't.
5. One Moment by Kristina McBride- I categorize this one as unique because it does something most books don't. It villianizes the victim. I loved the idea of dealing with someone's flaws AFTER they tragically died. There's nothing that can be resolved and you aren't supposed to feel that way towards someone who is no longer here... but there it was.
6. The Murder of Bindy MacKenzie by Jaclyn Moriarty- This whole series was truly unique for me. Maybe it's because I'm American and the author is Aussie... but at first I was like "what the hell am I reading???" and then all of a sudden it all makes sense. I've never read anything like it.

7. Crank by Ellen Hopkins- This was my first "verse" book.
8. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher- Told mainly through cassette tapes.
9. Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan- Told in an all-seeing, god-like voice of dead people.
Just All Around Unique:
10. Cinder by Marissa Meyer- I JUST finished this last night (I know, finally!!!). I have to say it's one of the most unique retellings I've ever read. It's a futuristic dystopian fairy tale retelling with freaking robots and plagues and aliens!!

I'm reading Tease soon, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm glad to read that you liked it. Some other books on your list I fully intend to read soon. I agree with you about Cinder and The Time Traveler's Wife being unique!

I really tried with Tease, and I don't think it was the perspective it was told in, and I just couldn't connect to any of the characters and I ended up not carrying about any of it at all. I don't know, but I couldn't continue and dnf'd it, which was probably best. I need to get on Cinder, god damn it, and I totally agree on Thirteen Reasons Why, it's so good! Great list Michelle! :D
ReplyDeleteThis is Not a Test and Cinder almost made my list - and definitely would have if I posted all ten myself instead of sharing the duty with April - and I completely agree with why you find each book unique. Both are easily favorites of mine, too. Great list!
ReplyDeleteLoved Cinder - it would definitely make my list. I haven't read a lot of these yet (like Tease, which I'm on the fence about reading), but I can definitely agree with the points you mentioned about those that I have. Crank used to be one of my favorite books both because of how it was told, and its subject matter. It was just an emotionally gripping story. I haven't read a book by Ellen Hopkins in years though. And 13 Reasons Why remains one of my favorite reads when I was a little younger - it was an interesting spin on suicide and how the victim of bullying tells their story. (Although I don't remember too well why the girl killed herself, I just remember her calling out a lot of people.)

ReplyDeleteI loved, loved, loved Thirteen Reasons Why, Cinder and This Is Not a Test. This is Not a Test was unlike any other zombie book I've read before. I really enjoyed it! I'll have to check out some of these other books then. Great picks! :D
