The Duff: Designated Ugly Fat Friend By Kody Keplinger

Bianca is labeled the DUFF by one of the hottest guys in school. He tells her one-on-one in a kind of creepy encounter.  (Basically it means that she's the ugly fat girl who is surrounded by gorgeous skinny girls everyone wants to bang.)  So what does she do? Makes out with him. Yeah cause that makes sense. And then when her family seems to be falling apart at the seams she decides the best way to deal is to sleep with said a-hole. But wait!! It seems a-hole does have a soul after all... and after she finally gets noticed by her geeky crush, he realizes he loves her and MUST have her back. Cause that would ever happen??

***Some Spoilers***
Nope just not buying this one. I can agree that non-good looking/chubby people have boyfriends and all that, but the hottest guy/biggest man-whore in school?  No that's not happening in high school. Also guys don't fall in love with a girl who is using them for sex. It doesn't happen and I don't want young girls to read this and think that it does. You're not going to throw yourself at a guy after speaking 5 words to him and then realize you both have family issues and live happily ever after. He may have been happy to sleep with her (I mean there are a lot of whorish guys out there), but he would not be making this girl his girlfriend.  The M/C blatantly says this guy makes her skin crawl and that he sleeps with anything that breathes, has she no self respect?  At least make her be drunk when she's doing it!

I'm guessing that this whole book is wish fulfillment for a girl who maybe didn't get a lot of male attention in high school.  But high school is what high school is... most of them are all the same.  The ugly duckling is not going to get the beautiful guy AND the one she's been crushing on.  Sorry if that's mean, but it's reality.

I heard so many good things about this book, but no I wasn't feeling it at all. And also FYI the swearing in this book is out of control!!!! I am giving it 2 stars instead of 1 just based on the fact that I know the author was super young when she wrote it and that it was sort of readable.

P.S.- I wanted to read A Midsummer's Nightmare so bad, but now I'm scared!

Add it to your To-Read List (if you dare!)

  1. I enjoyed A Midsummer's Nightmare a lot more than the DUFF. Just a heads up Michelle :) While I still didn't think it was realistic, it was an easy, enjoyable read.

I totally know what you mean. A lot of other reviews have been playing up the romantic fantasy factor and making me think that I'd buy it, too . . . but I'd probably have the same reaction as you. You're right that it's not realistic and that it's not okay.
