People Who Scoff at Reading
Do you have those friends or acquaintances that when they find out you like to read, look at you like you are crazy?? Well I unfortunately do. There have been quite a few people that I have encountered who act like reading is for weirdos. Like reading is for people who have no life. It amazes me that there are a lot of people in this world who have never read a full-length book. To them the thought of it is torture.
I get it, reading isn't for everyone. But if you're going to judge me I'm going to judge you. I feel bad for people who haven't found the joy in reading. Everyday I get to go to different worlds and experience different lives all through reading. It's like going on an adventure and still being able to be wrapped up in a warm fluffy blanket on your favorite chair.
The number 1 thing I want to address is that reading isn't for people who have no life. I am plenty busy in my life, trust me. But people will say "How do you possibly make time to read that many books... I am just way too busy." Here's the answer: I make time! It's my god-damned hobby. Just like those other people make time to watch a movie or play video games or go outside and do whatever, I make time to read because it's what I love to do. I don't need to be looked down on like I'm super-lame because I like to read and make time for it.
Maybe it's all the forced reading in HS and college that turns some people off to reading. I don't know, but don't knock my hobby!! And don't get me started on what happens when people find out I blog about books... wow. Sometimes people look at me like I'm from Mars... (or Hogwarts lol).
Have you ever encountered someone who actually brags about not ever reading?? I have. I've met quite a few people who think they are cool because they've never read a book (just cliff-notes or whatever). Ummm this is cool? No. Not cool. Dumb.
Basically we all have our own hobbies... and we're all super busy. Some people like to go fishing or do yoga or play Candy Crush. If I have spare time, I read. And I'm not ashamed to admit it!!
So do you ever get weird looks or comments when people find out you read (and BLOG about it!!!)????
Oh my god, I remember back when I was in high school (10 years ago, OMG!) I would always look at the people who bragged about never reading and think WTF??? Not everyone is going to love reading, and that's fine, but never having read a book isn't something to be proud of.
ReplyDeleteI definitely count reading as a hobby. Since I've gotten more blogging and reading I've cut back on the TV I watch, which honestly I'm very happy with.
My sister scrunches her face even if i talk about a book.. Im like "oh well.. I choose to read if you dont like it look the other way!!! " It does annoy me.. And then there are the ones that makes up excuses like i have no time, no money, and blah this and blah that..
ReplyDeleteIm not a blogger but i do follow a lot of the bloggers and enjoy doing so.. I have found SOOO many new and old books by their reviews and so on..My wish list has multiplied!!!
