The Reviewers' Roundtable is a weekly discussion feature hosted by me and Emily from Read Your Bookcase.  Each week we discuss a different bookish/blogging topic and hope you guys will share your thoughts too!

Thoughts on Graphic Novels

So I've never read a graphic novel.  But when I go to the library I see that section becoming more and more packed with books.  From my understanding "The Graphic Novel" is really just a fancy way of saying comic book and more and more bestselling novels are being made into these graphic novels.

I can totally see how these books can be a really good thing.  There are a lot of reluctant child/tween/teen readers out there... add in with that that we live in a very visual society.  So I can see how these graphic novels would appeal to educators and parents to get kids interested in books.  I think it's a fabulous idea.

My son actually came home with a Lego Star Wars graphic novel recently and I read it to him.  He loved it and I found it just as good as reading a regular picture book to him.  I can see him getting into the GN's that they have out for elementary kids when he learns how to read.

I'm not really sure what purpose some of the older YA books being made into GN's is.  I guess maybe it's the same principle.  I don't think it's something I'm going to be interested in... although contemporary books wouldn't really make awesome Graphic Novels, so I don't think I'm the right audience.  I wouldn't mind reading the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children: The Graphic Novel.

Here are some YA books that have been made into graphic novels:

These were ones I thought looked cute for MG and younger:

So now I want to know: what do you think of the graphic novel trend?  Do you read them or know someone who does? Do you have any you would recommend to me or for my son (he's 5)?

  1. Yeah I never really got into the whole graphic novel thing either. This is a good discussion topic! I think that I would probably be interested in reading some thing like the Miss Peregrine's graphic novel as well, but I can't really think of any others.

  2. I like original graphic novels, not the re-dos. I think the purpose of making a best-selling novel into a graphic novel is to make more money, honestly. It might introduce the story to a new audience, but as a librarian, I am a bit skeptical about that.

Also, as time goes by more and more graphic novels are being recognized as literature. The quality of the genre is definitely increasing. It's awesome to watch. When I first started working at the library, we didn't have any. Now we have a ton. At first, it was just manga and classic literature as graphic novels. Now that there's a lot more variety, I'm way more interested in it.

(Also, some graphic novels are compilations of comics, like Fables. Others are written as a novel in that format.)

    1. Wow yeah I really have no idea about graphic novels. They are definitely foreign to me. I started hearing about Manga about 10 years ago when my cousin was into it. But I didn't know it had become something bigger until I started seeing my library having an entire section dedicated to it. I would have to read one to know if I think it is truly literature or not, but I'm glad the writing in them is getting better and better. That can only be a good thing for teens who don't like to read, but like GN's.

  3. I have not ever read a graphic novel in my life. It is so awful! I don't know why I can't get myself to do it! Well, I sort of do know, because I always find them so much more expensive than normal books and seeign how I'll probably get through them faster, my economic brain won't go with it ;D Anyway, I love your suggestions here and will totally try some of them at some point! Great post idea, by the way!

  5. Creators will be more pulled in to a task that has a reasonable, elegantly composed brief. In the event that creators comprehend a little about your business and what you are searching for in a logo structure then they will probably concoct important ideas for you. Give subtleties and references to other logo plans where conceivable. You should likewise tell them how you intend to utilize the logo. logo design service
