Today's Topic
Father's Day Freebie-- My Best and Worst Dads in YA
Cool
1. This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills-- Everett Finch aka Michael Finch was so funny and memorable. I loved his fanfic addiction and the father/daughter talks he had with Sloane.
2. Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett-- Bailey's dad is the kind of dad you can TALK to. Not too many of those in YA, so I appreciated it.
3. Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen-- Halley's dad was a radio star in their town-- that's got some cool-factor to it!! Plus, he showed her he had her back by bringing her milkshakes after she fought with her mom.
4. If I Stay by Gayle Forman-- Mia's dad was just cool, not DAD cool, cool cool.
5. My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick-- Mr. Garrett is the dad of all dads.
UnCool
6. Torn Away by Jennifer Brown-- Jersey's stepdad & bio dad both get the loser award for terrible dad-ing.
7. Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum-- Jessie's dad pissed me off by dragging her across the country and then completely checking out of her life.
8. Conviction by Kelly Loy Gilbert-- Braeden's dad was more than just a bad dad, he was a bad person.
9. The Women in the Walls by Amy Lukavics-- I feel kinda bad putting Lucy's dad on the list, but he was nonexistent in her life, so here he is.
10. Bad Romance by Heather Demetrios-- Grace's stepdad "the Giant" was another terrible person as well as a terrible dad. Seriously, fuck him.
Which dads are on your lists this week?
The dads in If I Stay and My Life Next Door were indeed so amazing in their own ways <3 And I totally agree with the dad in Tell Me Three Things, he really annoyed me!
ReplyDeleteYes, Mia's dad! One of the most interesting parts of that book was the fact that both her parents were significantly cooler than her. I also loved his hipster teacher thing! Don't mind me, I will just be in the corner quietly sobbing over If I Stay. Again.
ReplyDeleteModern dads are like the old nursery rhyme: "When (he) is good, he is very, very good, but when (he) is bad, he is horrid."

Bad Romance is everywhere, I need to check it out, great list!
ReplyDeleteI've not read any of these books. I'll have to check them out. Here is my Top Ten Tuesday
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with This Adventure Ends! I love the father-daughter relationship in that book. I love that the MC's parents were actually present in her life and acted like parents.
ReplyDeleteIt appears we have the same taste in book dads!
ReplyDeleteMia's dad in If I Stay is lovely! I wouldn't be able to think of good dads, I don't think. LOL Parents in general are usually somewhat "bad" in a lot of books.

Mr. Garret and Mia's dad were awesome. I was not happy with Jessie's dad in Tell Me Three Things either. Great list!
ReplyDeleteThe dad from Alex, Approximately from so AMAZING. Literally, the same with Mia's dad (and mom). Her parents were the coolest tbh. And yesss, Tell Me Three Things. It was such a problematic book altogether, but jeez, not the greatest dad-ing. lolol
DeleteThanks for your post!! I haven't read any of the books on your list, so have new books to check out.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to my TTT post for the week:

Happy reading!!
Torn Away is a fabulous choice! :-)
ReplyDeleteI really liked Bailey's dad as well. I loved that he allowed his daughter to discover things on her own :)
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm so horrible at remembering books. I know I've read Someone Like You, but I can't remember the story or the dad at all! Ugh. I need a better memory lol :)

I really need to re-read If I Stay at some point! Her family were so lovely. I haven't read any of the other books on your list but I'll definitely check them out. :)
ReplyDeleteI need to read Alex Approximately. Someone Like You and If I Stay sound like pretty good dad choices too.
ReplyDeleteI agree so much with the choices of Mr Garrett and Everett Finch - two of my favourite Dads from two of my favourite books.
