The Good and Bad About YA (7)

This is a new weeklyish thing I've been doing. I read so many YA books, and so there are some features that have been standing out to me. Some of them are positive and some negative. Every week (on Thursdays) I'm going to tell one good and one bad thing that shows up in YA :)

Good: I like books about popularity.  I don't know why, but I'm a sucker for books that feature high school popularity dynamics.  I love me a good mean girl!!  Books like this: Confessions of an Angry Girl by Louise Rozett, Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers, Sloppy Firsts  by Megan McCafferty

Bad:  I do not like books that feature multiple weird first names.  Ok it is believable that there is one set of wacky parents who decided to name their kid Yellow.  But if her BFF's name is Bumblebee and her boyfriend is named Tripp then I'm just annoyed.

Books like this:  The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (I know it's fantasy but Katniss & Peeta??), Lola and The Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins, and Sarah Dessen is good for this: Haven & Sumner, Colie & Norman, Rogerson, Remy & Dexter, etc.

So those are my thoughts this week... what books about popularity do you like... or what crazy character names made you be like huh???

  1. I'm totally with you on the weird first names thing! It's so unnecessary!
