It's time for another update on my obsessions!! Between the Broke and Bookish Secret Santa and the On the Same Page Secret Sister Project, it's got me thinking about stuff I like, stuff my friends like, and my changing obsessions in general. So I decided to start telling you guys what my obsessions are when I get them.
Rainbow Rowell
So Carry On came out last week!! I was really excited for that. I think anyone who read Fangirl was. But then I found out that Rainbow was coming to Pittsburgh 2 days after the release and my heart!!! I was in heaven. It's not often that Pittsburgh gets authors... especially ones I like!! So I went to the signing and she was everything I was hoping she would be. So funny, so adorable, so nice. Even after signing 300 books, she was still smiling and being super welcoming and nice.
My favorite part: While she was giving her talk, she told us (the audience) that she has awkward fangirl moments around her favorite authors also. I've acted like an idiot around my fair share of authors, so it made me feel so much better to know that they do it too. It's just when I love a book, I get super nervous to meet the author because... well, I don't know. Because they become like a celebrity or something to me. Someone who is worth being nervous for. I don't know why I do it, but I definitely do (Sarah Mylnowski, Adele Griffin, Marissa Meyer, just to name 3).
New TV
Last time on So Obsessed... I told you about some new fall TV I wanted to watch. Well, I watched some of those shows and here's what I thought:
Scream Queens- ehhhh. I'm not sure yet. I've watched 2 episodes and can't really say I loved it. And I SO wanted to love it. I mean, Jamie Lee Curtis!!! Emma Stone!! Sororities!! This should be epic. I knew it was parody, but this was more like spoof. It's over-the-top and completely silly more often than not. I really wanted something like Scream, which is an obvious take on horror films, but done in a way where you still care about the characters and their story. Scream Queens is more like Scary Movie, a film which spoofs horror films. You see what I mean?? Scream I was invested in, Scary Movie made me laugh at times, but I didn't take anything seriously, and I didn't care who the killer was or if anyone lived at the end. That's pretty much where I am with Scream Queens. It's like there are no rules and they can just make anyone be the killer for any ridiculous reason, so I don't really care who it is. My fave part so far: the Nick Jonas workout scene. If that was in every episode, I might be more invested :)
American Horror Story Hotel- I watched the first episode this week and liked it, but I need to see more before I make a decision. I hate to say this, but I almost got the feeling like they are trying too hard. We all know AHS knows how to do shocking. They know how to do out-there gross, and all that. But now I feel like they are going too hard for that shock and gore and are forgetting the story. I'm not sure what the heck the story is after that hour and a half long episode except a lot of people die in this hotel. On all the other seasons, we got to see a really cool history as to WHY all the f'd up things were happening. This season, it's just death, death, crazy weird gross death. In the first 4 scenes I saw deaths in ways I would never think I would ever see deaths. (Spiked dildo anybody???). Hopefully that was just them starting things off with a bang and storylines will develop, because right now I'm just kind of grossed out. PS- LOVE the song Lady Gaga and her man opened to. I don't know what it was, but it was PERFECT!
Grandfathered- I watched the first episode and it was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be: John Stamos playing himself. I will say dude from Drake and Josh is ADORABLE and I want to hug him and squish his cheeks.
Supergirl- I haven't watched yet. Anybody know if it's as good as advertised?
Flappers
My bookclub did an outing where we all dressed as 20's girls. It was a 30th birthday, so we were all saying goodbye to 20's... get it?? Anyway, I poured over the internet to find a cute flapper dress to wear. I found it surprisingly hard. I didn't want a costume, I wanted something I could wear again. Just a cute dress that gave a nod to the 20's. Well everything was either over $200, or it was nonexistent. I finally found this cute dress from Unique Vintage and was SO happy about it. It came just in the nick of time (2 hours before I left to go meet up with my group), and it fit great. Also 2 of the girls in the club bought me a cigarette holder that actually worked! It was a complete surprise and I love it!! But as far as obsessions go, I'm always obsessed with a themed party... always!
Soccer
If you guys didn't know I'm a soccer mom. Literally, my son plays soccer. He's been playing for 3 years and currently plays in an adorable 6-8 age group. You might not know this, but I LOVE sports. To the point where I wanted to go into sports management for my Master's just so I could be in that sports atmosphere all the time. But yeah, Cole's season is pretty much wrapping up, and I couldn't be prouder. He's scored 6 goals this season, and his team only lost 1 game. I'm looking to find an indoor league for him to play in for the winter because he likes it so much. So, I try not to push him too hard, but man it's hard. I get so invested in sporting events that I really do need to talk myself into chilling out. I don't want to be that crazy mom who pushes my kid so hard he ends up hating it.... but I also want the best out of him. It's definitely a delicate balance.... I'm working on it.
Do you have kids in sports?? Did you play anything as a kid?
Books
- I just finished Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater!! Ugh, it was such a journey for me. First, it took me SO long to finish it. Like I started reading it over 2 weeks ago and just now finished it. I don't know why I can't read her books fast, but I just can't! Maybe it's because they aren't books that have that super exciting build up to them. Like I'm not furiously flipping pages to find out what happens next because... well, I don't know why. I don't want to say nothing exciting happens, because stuff does happen. It's just that the flow of the book is very even for me and nothing seems more important than something else. Does that make sense?? Let me know if you've had this experience with Maggie Stiefvater books.
- Also YAY Maggie is coming to Pittsburgh Saturday!!! I know I said earlier that we don't get a lot of cool authors, and we usually don't!! 2 in 2 weeks is such a fluke! I love it!
- I'm about finished with Stand-Off by Andrew Smith. I am BEYOND so happy to say it is as good as Winger (the first book in this duology). It's just as funny and endearing. So far though, not as sad... but I think I need that because Winger tore out my heart.
- If you haven't read Winger yet, I SO recommend!!!
What are your recent obsessions?? Any fall stuff you've been enjoying? Have you watched any of the fall TV shows I've been watching? Any books that you've recently read that are just amazing?
You got to meet Rainbow Rowell! And Cassi! So awesome! I only watched the first episode of Scream Queen and I'm not too sure either. It was funny? I'll have to watch episode two and see what I think :D
ReplyDeleteYay for Rainbow Rowell!! I've been wanting to meet her so bad, so it was really awesome. Also yay for Cassi!!
DeleteThat's awesome that you got to meet Rainbow Rowell. Awesome pictures!
ReplyDeleteAs for Supergirl, I have that marked on my calendar and it doesn't premiere until Oct. 26th so you haven't missed it or anything.
Ohhhh good to know about Supergirl! I will definitely check it out later in the month :)
DeleteA friend of mine was watching Scream Queens and she told me to watch the trailer. I couldn't get over how weird it looked, but somehow I'm oddly interested. And I have to admit, my interest has a lot to do with Nick Jonas shirtless :P. I've wanted to watch AHS, but I wasn't exactly how scary it would be. Like, is it keep you up with the lights on scary? My recent TV obsession is Daredevil. SO GOOD. I wish I could play sports. I am awful, though. The only thing I did when I was younger is competitive cheerleading XD. I had the same issues with The Raven Cycle. The first two books took me FOREVER to read. There were points when I started to skim read, and I realized I was missing a lot of stuff. I don't think I'll continue on with the series. I just wasn't super invested in the plot. Anyways, I hope you have a great weekend! :D
ReplyDeleteSarah @ The Reading Petal
AHS is definitely nightmare inducing. All the seasons are creepy, gross, and just downright weird and scary. There's a clown in AHS Freak Show that made me scared of clowns when I've never been before. I think the more I watch though, the less it affects me, so there's that :) And Competitive Cheerleading is totally a sport!
DeleteI am super excited for Supergirl. I'll watch any kind of superhero show, but I'm really looking forward to this one. A 20s themed outing? How fun! I've always wanted to dress up like a flapper.
ReplyDeleteThe 20's theme was SO fun. It was also a lot of fun to go out dressed up NOT during Halloween. We definitely got a lot of weird looks, but it was fun!! And I am definitely going to watch Supergirl now that I'm in the know about when it starts!
DeleteI've also seen Scream Queens. I liked the humor but wanted it to be more dark. More black humor (think Heathers). I felt it was too spoof-y like you said. Also I am so excited to read THE STAND-OFF - I keep forgetting it's out. (Man I am soo behind on books) And I love the 'saying goodbye to your 20s' with a 20s themed party ;-)
ReplyDeleteYes!!! I would totally have gone for a more Heathers version of Scream Queens. It was definitely more Wayans :( I hope you love Stand-Off as much as Winger!!! I'm pretty sure you will though!
