Why I Kind Of Love To Hate Some Books

I'm going to make a confession that I probably shouldn't--- Sometimes I like to hate books!!

Did you ever read a book and you just freaking HATE it??  It's doing all those things that irk you:
  • the cliches
  • the instalove
  • the girl is gasping for breath or blushing
  • the guy is a man-whore and it's being made out to be the sexiest quality ever
  • the girl is a virgin and people treat her as if she's made of glass
Those are just some of my usual no-no's.  But sometimes (not a lot, but yes SOMETIMES), I like when this happens.

Why you ask??  Well..... I feel bad for saying this, but sometimes I enjoy reading books that are annoying me.  Sometimes I read just to see how ridiculous this situation can get.  Sometimes it entertains me to a laughable degree to see all the things I hate in books come to life in a single story.

Another confession: when I'm done doing that, sometimes I like to look up GOOD reviews for said book and get all incredulous at how someone read THE SAME BOOK I read and they actually LIKE it???!!!?  I don't do it to be mean.  I do it because, as weird as it is, I have fun having an inner-diaglogue with myself about the book and the things I hated and people liked about it.

Is this weird?

Also: Writing reviews about books I have OPINIONS on are so much easier to write.  That's not to say those opinions have to be negative, but both ends of the spectrum (extreme good and mostly bad) are just easier to get my thoughts together on.  Books in the middle are so BLAH to write about at times.  How many ways are there to say "It was okay", "It held my attention in parts", "I thought the characters were nice, but didn't 100% connect with them"?  It's easy to be like "LOVED LOVED LOVED- Heres why:" and "UGH this book made me so mad".

You guys-- I swear I'm not mean, but sometimes I do take joy in NOT liking something.  I don't know why, I just do.

Does anyone else find this enjoyable at times??  Do you ever think about DNFing and stop and say- "Wait, lets see how OMG this can get"??

**or maybe I'm doing this while reading stuff I hate all by myself?**

    1. Hahaha thank you!! I'm glad to know I'm not alone!

  2. I totally do this! I have a tendency to never DNF unless things are really bad or I'm struggling to get through. Sometimes I like to read "bad" books in between because it breaks things up a little bit!

    1. It totally does break it up. Also with review writing... not to be a downer, but it gets boring constantly writing why "I loved it"

  3. I agree it's much easier to write negative reviews than positive reviews. Somehow it's just easier to put your finger on what's not working. If it IS working, sometimes you just don't notice it.

    1. Is it though??? I don't know why that is, but sometimes I just draw a blank when trying to describe why I like books!

  4. I do that sometimes but not as often anymore because I just can't deal so I DNF hahah. If I'm super curious, I'll look up spoilery reviews. But there is one book I made myself finish even though I hated it and every time I see good reviews for it or excitement over the rest of the series I GENUINELY DON'T UNDERSTAND. You're so right about writing reviews too! Meh books are tricky.

    1. To be honest I DNF a lot of books that I'm loving to hate... I just read on a little more than I normally would and skim some parts just to see how crazy it will get :) Also YES to seeing the good reviews about books I found offensively bad. I almost want to comment and say DID WE READ THE SAME BOOK??? But I know that would be rude, so I don't :)

  5. Haha, I do sometimes do this. Mostly with mysteries to be honest. I have to keep reading to see how predictable and cliche it is to have my theories proven right. They can get so tropey sometimes that it's almost fun to see how early you can solve them.

    1. Well you are much better than me at figuring out mysteries, so I could definitely see you doing that!! The tropes are why it is SO HARD to find those YA Mystery gems.

  6. Great post!! I found your point of view spot on... I dislike a lot of the same cliches you do too. Reading some books is like watching a train wreck though, you can't help but want to read it further to see where it takes you despite the you dislike about it.

I also find it easier to write reviews of books I have strong opinions -- good or bad.

    1. Those cliches are the entire reason why I don't read NA books.... unless I want to LOL :)

  7. Omg so true. Blah and middle of the road books are SO hard to write reviews for! I'll also admit sometimes I love to hate a book. If it's very bad I get a weird pleasure laughing at it. There are times where the book is just so ridiculous you can't help but continue just for laughs.

    1. It's so weird right??? It's the same with movies also... like sometimes it's so cheesy and ridiculous, you keep watching just because you can't look away!

  8. First off, that last gif is kind of adorable! Anyway, I tend to have a good idea what will work for me, so I don't really read a lot of books that make me go OMG THIS IS AWFUL. But I get what you mean! It really can be enjoyable to see how bad something can get. haha

    1. I love Sheldon!!! Unfortunately, I'm not that good at figuring out what will work for me. I get all hyped when I read certain blurbs and it outweighs all my good decision making. Plus I'm always looking for diamonds in the rough!

  9. I recently read a book that I absolutely loathed but I couldn't put it down. I had to see what happened next, to see how bad it could be. But as a rule, I don't go out of my way to read books that I know I will hate.

  10. I have done that a few times, been like "OMG this is so stupid, could it possibly get any worse!?" but usually when I do that, I'm skimming through the rest so that I can get to a book I actually enjoy! Instalove is definitely one of my biggest pet peeves, I can't get into a book/relationship when that happens.

  11. I sometimes like to read books I can't stand. They get my mojo going. It gives me juice so to speak. I really sit there and think about how much I'm going to rant and rave. But it also depends how bad, ya know? Great post!
