Top Ten Character Names
I think I'm sort of picky about names... but usually I can get used to a name once I've been reading the book for a while. Super weird names are definitely one of my pet peeves. I just don't like it when everyone's name is super crazy weird. Also the sound of some weird names instantly turn me off. Here is a list of names I thought really worked in books... and some not so much.
1. Jasper AKA "Jazz" from I Hunt Killers- I just thought this was a cool name for a dude... and super memorable.
3. Alaska Young from Looking for Alaska- I mean she named herself, how cool is that?? I just think it's a cool sounding name and one-of-a-kind!
4. Mara Dyer from The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer- I thought her name really went with the creepiness in the book.
6. Cricket Bell from Lola and the Boy Next Door- At first I didn't like this name at all. I mean could I really picture a hot guy being named Cricket... it reminded me too much of Jiminy. BUT it grew on me somehow. And now I can't imagine him being named anything else!
7. Hadley & Oliver from Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight- Cool names. Hadley is unique but not wierd and Oliver is PERFECT for a British hottie!
8. Sloane Price from This is Not a Test- Courtney Summers always comes up with cool names... and this is my fav.
Belly from The Summer I Turned Pretty series- I haven't read this series... but IDK if I can with a M/C with the name Belly. Terrible.
Nan (the BFF) from My Life Next Door- I don't like it.
Etienne St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss- I loved this book... and I don't mind the St. Clair part. But when Anna goes all Etienne all of a sudden I just couldn't like it.
Norrie and Sassy and Takey from Confessions of the Sullivan Sisters- I think the names were supposed to be family names since the Sullivan family has a long history... but no I don't like em.
Rogerson from Dreamland- Definitely sounds like a rapist.
Remy from This Lullaby- I like most of Sarah Dessen's off-the-wall names... but Remy reminds me of the name of a vaccuum or coffeemaker or something.
Katniss & Peeta- Just don't like these names. Peeta reminds me either of pita bread or the PETA organization. Katniss just confuses me.
America Singer fromThe Selection- I haven't read this one either, but I read on a review that this girl is a singer who lives in what used to be America. Really creative there.
Ponyboy & Sodapop from The Outsiders- Don't understand the significance of the odd names in this book. Maybe I'm missing something?!?
So I gave you guys a lot more than 10 this week... but there's a lot of good (and bad) names out there! I'm excited to see which names you thought were cool! Leave me your link and I'll check them out :)
Fantastic names Michelle. I nearly put Mara Dyer on my list. It does fit the book incredibly well.
ReplyDeletebwahaha i love that you have a WTF list! I so have to agree with America Singer

Hahaha I put Belly on my list of names I love. I know it sounds unusual if you haven't read the books, but it totally fits. It's like one of those weird family names like Chip or Birdie. One that has a story behind it :)

I love Jasper's name. It is super cool and memorable.
ReplyDeleteCricket was on my list as well. I love it.
Great list!
And lol at all the WTFs, especially Belly, Peeta and America. Although I totally have to disagree about Etienne. I love his name.
You break my heart with Etienne. It sounds so sexy rolling off the tongue. Have you seen The Beach? There is a guy named Etienne in that movie. :-) And The Summer series with Belly is a great series. You should give it a try. The name Belly annoyed me too, but it grows on you some and it's kind of cute in a little girl way as a nickname for Isabelle.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting. I too love the names Cricket, Sloane and Rory.
My TTT List
I totally forgot about Hazel and Echo, they are both names that I love. Whenever I think of the name Rory I can't help but think of Gilmore Girls. Great picks!
ReplyDeleteKristin @ Young Adult Book Haven
I like Echo and Sloane. :) LOL Love your WTFs. hahahha
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the name Hadley! The Summer I Turned Pretty is such a great book and series, IF you can get over that they all call her Belly for short! Poor girl. My TTT
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alaska and Hazel's names. They would have made my Top 15 list...so hard to narrow down to 10! And, Mara Dyer, yes, so creepy! I put Noah Shaw on my list just because I love his character so much.
ReplyDeleteAlaska made it on my list as well! lol definitely agree with what you associate Peeta with. I forgot about Cricket which is definitely kinda strange but quirky :)

I have been meaning to read I Hunt Killers forever. With a name like Jazz, I may have to move that up on my list. Also, I can't stand the name Peeta either. I call him the pita bread maker. Drives me crazy!
ReplyDeleteLove your lists. I didn't really like the nickname Belly either, and the names Katniss or Peeta aren't my favorites. I like their characters and the book, but name wise? Not for me.
ReplyDeleteThat said, totally love that you mentioned Sloane Price. Great character and cool name. :)

Happy Tuesday!
Love love love Echo, Hadley, Sloane and Hazel! And I totally agree on Nan, she also just pissed me off as a character. Belly has meaning in the story but I still didn't like it. Great choices!

I keep seeing Cricket on people's lists and I just can't believe I forgot it, I loved that name for her! And Hadley, that's another great name. I really like Hadley and Oliver together.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I'm not bothered by the name Katniss, but the name Peeta just drives me nuts. I just think it's so stupid. And I loved the actual Peeta, but it took me a while to come around to him, I think because of his stupid name!
I didn't do this TTT, but I liked so many of yours, so I had to comment! :) I love the names Jasper/Jazz, Rory, Hadley, Oliver, and Echo! As for the weird names...there's a MC named Belly?!?! I haven't read My Life Next Door yet, but the name Nan makes me think of someone's Grandma. Fun post! :)
ReplyDeleteAlice @ Alice in Readerland
Yes Nan is SO grandma... nan and pap! And apparently Belly is a nickname for Isabelle or Isabella. IDK but I don't like it!
DeleteI like your lists & the fact that you did the ones you like and a wtf list, although I don't agree with all your choices for the second. Very creative, though! :)

BAHAHA I totally agree about Rogerson. It just sounds skeevy! I don't mind Remy though...but maybe I'm just partial because it's my favorite Dessen book.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE RORY! And Jasper! And Hadley & Oliver!! <333 Pretty much like all your Cool Names. :)
I smiled when I saw Ponyboy and Sodapop. The Outsiders was one of my favorite books as a teen. It didn't hurt that the guys in the movie (Rob Lowe!!) were so hot.
ReplyDeleteStephanie @ Inspiring Insomnia
Can't believe I forgot about Belly- such a WTF! Echo, Hadley and Oliver are awesome. And haha yes, Ponyboy and Sodapop are very unusual but kind of perfect too. Great list!
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of your WTF choices. I didn't get Ponyboy and Sodapop either. How could parents be so cruel? Thanks for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteI love the name Mara Dyer and Sloane is such a beautiful, eye catching name.
