Books and Memories

One of my favorite things about reading is when I'm reading something and it reminds me of something that happened in my own life.  I did a post a while back when Roomies by Sara Zarr & Tara Altebrando was released in which I shared stories about my own roommates.  And that got me thinking about all the books I read and how they relate to my life.... or just remind me of memories in my life.  And I wanted to share more of that with you guys.  I hope this makes sense.  But anyway on to the book and the story....

by E. Lockhart

In honor of the We Were Liars release I wanted to share my all-time favorite E. Lockhart book (I've read them all): The Boyfriend List.  In The Boyfriend List we have Ruby Oliver, who just happens to be this really awesome, funny, main character... and one of my favorite mains of any book.  In the book Ruby is having issues with her ex-best friend Kim.  Kim basically stole Ruby's boyfriend Jackson... and when Ruby tries to get him back SHE'S the one labeled a boyfriend stealing slut?!?!?  It's infuriating.  Not only that, but her psychiatrist has her write down a list of all the guys she's ever had any type of connection with... and of course the list gets out!  Now everyone thinks that she's hooked up with all these guys (some of them she has barely even spoken to).

So for me this book hit a little too close to home.  I had a "Boyfriend List" situation happen to me in college.  It was Freshman Year and I was living in the dorm.  My roommate and I would always leave our door unlocked for some crazy reason or another and this time it came to bite me in the ass.  Well while I was off doing whatever, these 2 immature boys that also lived in the dorm entered my room and went through a bunch of my stuff.  Super rude, right??  And anyway, they found this stupid notebook I had where I wrote down a bunch of guys names.  Now yes some of these guys I had made-out with... some of them more... and some of them I just liked and nothing ever came of it.  Like there were guys on this dumb list that I met at the mall in 8th grade and literally just talked to on the phone for a few weeks after meeting them in person for 5 minutes.  So yeah it was a really dumb list to have... but I didn't think anyone else would be looking at it.

So the boys stole the list... and proceeded to tell our entire dorm (8 floors of people) that I slept with over 20 guys.  Right.  Like I just turned 18 and I've already had sex with 20 people.  That's a pretty busy high school experience.  But everyone was buying into it and believing it.... and I was pretty mortified.  Especially because there were a few people on there that lived in the dorm.  It was kind of a nightmare.  But it was college, so it blew over pretty quick.  Whenever someone brought it up I would just roll my eyes and pretend it didn't bother me.  I had a really active social life in college, so I wasn't around the dorm that much, and that helped.  But whenever I would see those 2 ignorant boys smirking at me, I would still feel myself blushing.

The moral of the story: DON'T WRITE STUFF LIKE THAT DOWN!!!!  EVER!!!  ANYWHERE!!  Just keep it in your head... it's safer that way and it can't be taken out of context.

Do you guys have any stories like this one??  Did you ever have a "list" get out?

  3. It is OK for me to think this is funny! Well.. only because you are older and past it. In college I had this bad thing happened. This guy stole all my underwear. It was awful. I did my laundry once and went back to my room. I did see this guy lurking around but didn't think anything of it. Then when I was folding my laundry my underwear where all gone. I reported it .. and the cameras weren't working of course. Well the next year after I was gone he was caught doing it to someone else. Just terrible!

    1. Yes it is pretty funny now!! Back then it wasn't so much embarrassing as it was infuriating that someone violated my room and went through my stuff. That underwear thing would totally creep me out. That is really freaking perverted!!

  4. HAHA! Oh my gosh, Michelle. I absolutely loved reading this and while I'm really sorry that so many guys can be stupid and immature, it was fun reading this post and story. I absolutely hate embarrassment so I would've died!
