Top Ten Books That Were Hard For Me To Read
1. Another Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn- This one had so many disturbing and weird things in it that it was hard to stomach. Cutting out hearts and eating them??? Ummm gross.
2. Uses for Boys by Erica Lorraine Scheidt- Hard to read because the M/C is so young when she starts hooking up with boys. She makes the mistake of thinking sex=love over and over.
3. But I Love Him/Stay- Hard for me to read because both books feature emotionally/physically abusive boyfriends and I went through something like that in my younger years.
4. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold- There are a lot of sad, disturbing things in this book... and being a mother made it even harder for me to read it.
5. TFIOS- Ummm yeah. Kids w/ cancer... it's got to be hard for anyone with a soul to read about stuff like that. Especially if you have a kid.
6. Me Since You by Laura Wiess- Hard to read because this family grieved and just kept on grieving for the whole book. It became overkill on the heartbreak.
7. Perfect Fifths by Megan McCafferty- Ughhh!!! 3rd person, pretentious characters, an entire chapter of haikus, an awkward shower scene... could this have been any more excruciating? I FORCED myself to finish this book because I wanted to finish the series, but it was HARD!!!
8. Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone by Kat Rosenfield- This book was full of adjectives and not much else. I guess like in a literary sense it was pretty, but I need more plot... and it took the girl an hour to walk across a room because everything was being over-described.
9. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta- This book was hard to get into. SO many characters... so much confusion!! I didn't have a clue what was going on until at least halfway through.
10. Invincible Summer by Hannah Moscowitz- OMG what was this book?? Crazy weird family that does icky stuff and goes around quoting Camus because..... well I'm not sure exactly. Reading it was like pulling off a Band-Aid extra slow!
Happy Tuesday everyone!! Oh yeah, and I decided not to include classics and required reading I did back in the day because that's a whole list in of itself (The Sun Also Rises).
HAHA! Your comments on Invincible Summer! So weird right??!!! It was just so ick. And I read it like 3 years ago and I can still remember all the ick.

DeleteI think I've got Another Little Piece on my KIndle but I haven't read it yet. I've heard very mixed things about Uses For Boys but I still kinda want to read it. But I might never read The Fault in Our Stars because of the Cancer thing. I haven't read any of your WTF ones but isn't Jellicoe Road usually pretty well-liked?

With Jellicoe Road I think it's either loved or hated. I haven't heard too many middle of the roaders on that one. I didn't like it because it was SO confusing!! I think the writing was good, I just didn't know what was happening!

ReplyDeleteInteresting mix, and the ones that were difficult because of the content sound kinda gross, and those last two interesting. I went through a similar thing when I was younger (unhealthy relationship) and I haven't really delved into much fiction surrounding the topic, would you recommend them even though the content made them tough to read?

I forgot about The Lovely Bones. It did have difficult subject matter! I enjoyed it, though; the premise and storytelling were quite good.
ReplyDeleteOh man The Lovely Bones was a hard one for me. I read it when I was 14 or 15 the same age as the main character so I was sooo freaked out to go anywhere b y myself…fear of it happening to me. I liked Hannah Moskowitz's first book (BREAK, which was about a boy who tries to break all of his bones to see what would happen, sick sense of life, etc. very different & guy POV done well written by a 17 year old girl yup she was 17!) and her latest (about teen fairy prostitutes) sounds quirky but Invincible Summer never appealed to me…

The Lovely Bones was a book that I absolutely loved when I read it, but I did find it hard to read. I was in my early teens when I read it and it definitely solidified my fear of walking through fields by myself, haha. Another Little Piece Of My Heart has people eating hearts? WHAT THE HELL?!?!?! GROSS!
