The End of Year Fear-- Books I Need To Read, Like Yesterday

With Halloween coming up in less than a week, I just started going into book reading panic mode!!

Every year around this time, I start realizing that time is slipping away and that no matter how fast I read for the next 2 months, I'm not going to be able to read all the books I wanted to get read in 2016.  I don't know why this matters all that much, but the changing of the years feels like a deadline for me.  Maybe it's because that's how I measure favorites??  Faves of 2017 can't go on the same lists as Faves of 2016, ya know??

Another thing bumming me out is that I'm 14 books behind schedule on my Goodreads Goal.... opps!!  There's no way I'm going to be able to catch up on 14 books!  I guess I can mark that as a giant FAIL once again!!  I'm very bad at reading goals, if you haven't figured this out.

Without further ado, here are the books I wanted to read by the end of 2016 and haven't yet:

The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron
Replica by Lauren Oliver
Afterward by Jennifer Mathieu
Never Missing, Never Found by Amanda Panitch

  • These were all published recently-ish, but they all make me nervous.  You see, they were TOP priorities when I found out they were going to exist, but now--- I'm looking at the calendar and the books that I've promised publishers that I would read, and I'm wondering HOW I'm going to fit them in???

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis
This is Where the World Ends by Amy Zhang
The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
Winter by Marissa Meyer

  • These all came out in the past year.  There's 2 series enders-- And I LOVE the shit out of both series.... so why haven't I felt like reading those endings?  The other 2 just sound SO good and I can't believe 2016 is almost over and they are still on my shelf.

What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick
The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler
The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

  • These are all a little older but !!!!!!!!  Huntley Fitzpatrick and Sarah Ockler are 2 of my favorite authors of EVER.  And The Sea of Tranquility is one that I've been meaning to read for SO DAMN LONG.  Every year I say THIS is the year I'll do it.  Basically, I really need to do it!

A lot of my problem is that I'm a mood reader and a slow reader.  I always think I can read more than I can, and I always think EVENTUALLY I'll be in the mood for books that I never seem to ever get in the mood for.  Basically, I'm my own worst enemy.

Now I need your help!!  What should I definitely make time to read before 2016 dies out?  Seriously pick a book for me-- Pretty please!!

  1. Afterward is amazing and quick - read that one if you can. The Summer of Chasing Mermaids isn't that great - I think you can skip that one. Winter is wonderful too but super long - good luck. I'm feeling the year end panic too!

    1. YES Winter is SUPER long. And those pages are so thin, I feel like I'm reading the Bible. I really think I must read Afterward!

  2. On the bright side, you have so many exciting books on your TBR! I really want to get to A Madness so Discreet as well (which we've talked about since we both loved The Female of the Species) and I cannot wait for you to read The Raven King or Winter!

    1. Gahhhh I can't believe I haven't read the endings to The Raven Boys OR The Lunar Chronicles!!! I have issues.

  3. I can completely relate! In fact, Replica is making me panic for the same reason. I was SUPER excited about this book at BEA, so why haven't I read it yet? It makes no sense. (I read and loved The Forgetting, though.) Same goes for the fact that I haven't read Winter yet, even though I love the series. And What I Thought Was True! Yikes! Why am I reading this post? It's stressing me out! :-)

    1. Haha I stressed you out and you made me feel better!! I'm happy to know someone else made Replica a top priority at BEA and still didn't read it

  4. Out of tall the books you have, I've only read A Madness So Discreet. It's really dark but a standalone! So if you're ever in a mood for something dark then AMSD is your book :D

  5. I wasn't a fan of The Sea of Tranquility probably one of the few who wasn't. The Summer of Chasing Mermaids is up there for me. Can't wait to read that one, eventually. :P

    1. I can't believe I haven't read that Sarah Ockler book. She is my girl (and by girl I mean I like her books and she doesn't know I exist).

  6. I so have end of the year fear where I start thinking about all the books I haven't gotten to and that a new batch of books is about to be published come January. I've been skipping monthly TBR lists, but I just might have to make one just to feel reassured about what I have time to read and what I don't. I just finished my review of A Madness So Discreet and can't say enough wonderful things about it and you must finish The Raven King. Stiefvater just blows me away with her stories. I hope you're able to stay on track with all your end of the year reads!

    1. I have so much end of year anxiety right now. HOW will I be able to do all of those??? I just made plans to buddy read A Madness So Discreet, so that's happening. And you're right-- The Raven King is a total must!

  7. I liked Replica but I didn't love it. =/ I really liked Sea of Tranquility when I read it a few years ago. I say make that a top priority.

I really want to read A Madness So Discreet too! I started Female of the Species on audio yesterday and I'm really liking it so far!

    1. I'm SO excited to see what you think about The Female of the Species!!! I think Sea of Tranquility is going to have to be a priority. I've been putting it off for WAY too long.

  8. Omg you have to read The Raven King before the year is out!! It's so amazing and I think you'll love it. It's sad the series is over, but dang the last book is just so good though. :D

  9. I own and STILL need to read The Raven King and Winter. Sigh. It's difficult to read my own books when I'm drowning in review books! haha

  10. Michelle! You need to stop reminding me that you haven't read The Raven King and Winter yet because... SERIOUSLY!!!!

But no, I totally get like this too. It is usually popular stuff that I saw really good reviews for and just didn't get to. It's often books I skipped because they were in the TBR and came out at the same time as a ton of other highly anticipated reads. You always have to make the choice of one book over the other and that means sometimes good books get skipped. I usually take December to read all the books I meant to read and didn't get to and I will probably do that again.

    1. I KNOW!! I'm terrible. I love the idea of using December to catch up because really not that many books come out in December. I wish I could read as fast as you do though.... it would make reading life a lot easier.

  11. I soooo know what you mean,.I am so behind in my Challenges, but life gets in the way sometimes. I am slower than most other bloggers, mainly because I read physical books and sometimes I dont read for a week!! Great post!!

    1. I hate being a slower reader. It bums me out... but what can you do?? And yeah, LIFE. It's always messing with my reading time!

  12. I so get what you mean, both about being a mood reader and about feeling like the end of the year is this huge, important deadline. There's so much I want to be reading "soon" and it won't ever fit in the next two months! Replica is one of those I absolutely want to read SOON!

    1. OMG right??? I don't know why I put pressure on myself to get things done by the end of the year, but I just do. Part of it is that it counts toward my yearly "reading goal", part of it is that I want more options for the "2016 faves list", and part of it is that I hate rollover.

  13. I think you and I have similar reading habits. I am a mood reader and I am also very slow reader. I also tend to freak out this time of year. So many books and so little time. I also haven't read Winter, but I bought it on release day. Le sigh.

    Good Luck.

    1. I bought Winter on release day too!! I made this big deal about going to this bookstore that was kind of far away because I couldn't wait even one single day longer..... and then it's been over a year!!!! I am basically insane.

  14. Hmm I don't think it's possible to outrun our TBR pile, like they ALWAYS grow faster than we could possibly read :') but oohh being behind on goodreads goals is annoying! It happened to me last year because campus was crazy busy but I managed to succeed this year :P

I also want to read Replica! I've seen it in the bookstore several times but always ended up buying other books :') I think you should read The Raven King and Winter soon as they're both AMAZING and it would be better to finish the series so you could start and focus on new ones :D

And ohhh I love The Sea of Tranquility! <3 It was a quick read that you could finish in one sitting so maybe read it? :P I wouldn't really recommend What I Thought Was True though, I love My Life Next Door but this one was kind of disappointing. There was a lot of wittholding of information and I was confused the whole time :(

  15. Ahhh I still need to read The Raven King too! I'm not quite sure why I haven't gotten around to it yet (maybe worried it won't live up to my expectations???) but I definitely need to make it a priority before the end of the year!

  16. Oooh The Raven King AND Winter!?! Both so good. I still need to read The Forgetting too; I know what you mean about the dates sneaking up on you. My mood reading doesn't help me either haha.

  17. Great post idea, I may have to steal it ♥

But, of these, I would say YES YES YES you must read The Raven King and The Sea of Tranquility. And yes, totally understand being a mood reader but these ones !!!!!!!
