Today (July 10th) the Topic was a Freebie, so I decided to do:
Top Ten Books that Scared the Heck Out of Me
1. Helter Skelter By: Vincent Bugliosi- Don't ever read this at night when you are home alone! Seriously, just don't read it at night!! It freaked me out so bad one night every little creak and outside noise became people breaking in my house. So scary because it really happened... and could easily happen again!
2. This is Not a Test By: Courtney Summers- This book gave me nightmares 3 nights in a row. I literally had to finish it even though I was super busy because I wanted my life to go back to normal... NO ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!!!
3. The Shining By: Stephen King- SCARY!! The movie and the book are both some of the scariest stuff out there!
4. The Lord of the Flies By William Golding: - Ok well I was quite young when I originally read this so you have to put it in context. But when they killed Piggy I was like WHAT!!! So traumatized!
5. Living Dead Girl By: Elizabeth Scott- Well I'm a mother so that's one reason this book freaked me out... another reason is it's just so graphic. I finished it in one night because I didn't want it on my brain any longer.
6. Night By: Elie Wiesel- I read this in High School and it was pretty frightening. When something so awful happens in fiction it's easier to shrug off, but knowing this happened in real life is pretty horrifying.
8. But I Love Him By: Amanda Grace - Scared because I actually was in a relationship semi-like this one. It really freaked me out to read so many years after that relationship ended because it gave me a new perspective on what I was really like in that relationship... and I didn't like thinking myself in that way.
9. Fear Street Books By: R.L. Stine- Throwback!! Many a Fear Street book kept me up at night and gave me nightmares and even daymares! Books like: The Cheerleaders, The New Boy, The Overnight, The Sleepwalker... so scary to a 13-year-old!
10. The Fault in Our Stars By: John Green- This book made me think about life and how it's all meaningless and how we're all going to die and eventually no one will care and eventually there won't even be anyone alive who even knew us and all of my stuff and pictures and everything I've built will be meaningless and worthless... Scary stuff right?????

Such a fabulous list!! And I think I agree on most of them... I had forgotten all about R.L. Stine's Cheerleaders!! Oh my gosh - that kept me up at night!

Great list! I had nightmares from The Hunger Games. I didn't think the story was that scary, but my subconscious thought other wise...

Helter Skelter is so gory and worse, because it's not fiction. I read The Shining at night; I still remember how scared I was!! Nice list, I am going to have to read some of these.
ReplyDeleteThose Fear Street books were my favourite back in the days (lol). I loved them and devoured them. Seriously, I read them at night. Back then I adored scary books. I really want to read This is Not a Test. I like reading about zombies.

DeleteI will admit to having some scary zombie filled nights around the time I read This is Not a Test. Definitely creepy. Have you seen the book trailer? There are SOUNDS for what the zombies screeches are like. I watched it and got even more freaked out. Don't get me wrong - loved the book, but wowww to the scare factor.
ReplyDeleteFault in Our Stars and Lovely Bones didn't scare me, just made me sad. But I have This is Not a Test coming in the mail, and now I'm scared to read it...although I still will :-)

Some of my family members are huge Stephen King fans, and they always warn me not to read his books at night. I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to zombies, but I still want to read This Is Not a Test.

YES! Fear Street! I loved those. They really are terrible, but I don't care!
ReplyDeleteThe Shining is amazing - I think I was more freaked about the film though, Jack Nicholson is mind blowing in that one. The Lovely Bones was sad and quite graphic - the film was a complete disappointment to me.
ReplyDeleteI had high hopes for the Lovely Bones movie, with Marky Mark being in it and all.... but yeah it was pretty bad :( The book was awesome though!
DeleteI'm a huge fan of anything terrifying (mostly because few things scare me), so I really enjoyed reading this list. I'm actually reading This is Not a Test right now - fingers crossed that it manages to frighten me. I loved The Lovely Bones, and Living Dead Girl is one of the most hauntingly beautiful books I've ever read (but it made me feel so emotional and uncomfortable all at once). And ahhh, I LOVE The Fault in Our Stars so much!

Yeah, I probably shouldn't read most of these :) Especially Helter Skelter. The most recent one that scared me was Anna Dressed in Blood! It got less scary though. Great list!
