Top Ten Tuesday- Quitter Edition

Top Ten Tuesday is a really cool original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and The Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten List that bloggers join in on answering... and today (October 6th) I'm one of them :)

Today's Topic

Top Ten Different Book Things I Have Quit

1.  Adult- I haven't quit this genre purposely, but YA has taken over my life the last 4 years.  I have read a few books (mostly just Gillian Flynn and Silver Linings Playbook), but I just don't have time to devote to books about things I'm not 100% interested in.... which sadly is adult life and responsibilities (maybe I'll grow up someday)

2.  New Adult- This I have willingly quit.  I can't seem to find any New Adult that I find GOOD.  If I'm going to read books about people in college (which I WANT to), they're going to have to be more like Fangirl and less like Beautiful Disaster.

  • I'm really good at finishing series.  I guess I like to finish what I start... and I get curious even if I don't 100% love the books.  But these were ones I'm done with:

3.  Twilight by Stephanie Meyer- I read the first one (well most of it... some of it I skimmed), and I'm sorry but I HATED Bella.  She was SO weak.  Also Edward was major stalkerly.
4.  Denton Little's Death Date by Lance Rubin- I wasn't feeling the first book, so I'm not going to continue.
5.  Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard- There are 16 freaking books in this series!!  16!!  And they're all about the same 4 girls with crazy stuff constantly happening to them.  I got to book 11 and I had to end my misery.
6.  Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige- I thought the first book was just okay.  It started to pick up towards the end, but not really enough to make me want to continue.  Plus the author made me a little skittish with her stalker support tweets.

7.  Tattooed Bad Boys as a love interest- NO!!!
8.  Hate to Love Romance- I'm so sick of the "I hate you, then I love you" stuff.  Sometimes it can be done really well, but in general it makes me roll my eyes.  I mean, it's not like the reader can't see that the "I hate you" people are going to get it on, so it becomes lame IMO.
9.  Oblivious Main Characters- I am SO over dumb main characters.  You know the ones- the guy obviously LOVES and ADORES the girl, but she can't seem to see it- the girl keeps making the same mistakes over and over and has no clue.
10.  Insta-Love (obviously)

BONUS:

The Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty- Books 1 & 2 = YES!!!  Books 3-5, I wish I wouldn't have.
The Shadowlands by Kate Brian- Book 1, I loved.  I was shocked, mindfucked, and all that.  Book 2 & 3 = instalove and an entirely different storyline.
The Catcher and the Rye by J.D. Salinger- I read it to see what all the fuss was about... I still don't know.

Those are my quits... what are yours?

  1. You have pretty and organized post. I enjoy reading it.
I even don't start with Twilight, I watched the movie and that was enough.

  2. I am kind of with you on the New Adult. I will try one here and there but I don't seem to enjoy them much anymore. I quit PLL too. Just too many - plus there is a TV show. Great list!!

  3. great list. I have quite adult too... trying not too. I get a few in there every now and again but yes ya has taken over my life. Not big on NA at all never have been. I felt it was those that wanted YA to be dirtier. I don't mind insta love too much. I hate love triangles!!! I quite pretty little liars too. It just dragged on way too long.

  4. I quit PLL too, the books and the show. I think I'm in the minority when it comes to tattooed bad boys, I love them LOL. It's just my type, in Books and IRL, just ask my tattooed husband ;)

I don't read adult as much as I used to, but there are a few series that I've kept up with and I'd like to find more good series to read.

  5. I haven't even attempted to read The Pretty Little Liars series, for the same reason why you've quit. I have also given up on the TV show. Urgh. I feel like it's never ending. I'll admit, I still love the hate to love romances. I can't get enough of them. This might be because I haven't read too many of them yet. Maybe in a few months I'll change my tune haha.

  6. Haha I'm on book 5 of Pretty Little Liars right now and I can't see myself making it too much further either. I also really liked Dorothy Must Die but the twitter thing made me wary. I decided to try to separate the author from the work and continued on and the second book was AWFUL. Like not even the slightest bit interesting. There was an action scene in the very first chapter and then nothing else for the rest of the book. I'm done with it too.

    1. So that 2nd book is opposite of the first book- nothing happens and then right at the end a small bit of action. Good to know I'm not missing anything!!

  8. I read almost exclusively YA, I can't help it, I just like the books. I even read more middle grade books than adult books. I don't even touch New Adult books because they kind of seem like the same story over and over again, or at least the covers are just versions of one another. I didn't enjoy Dorothy Must Die for several reasons. I've heard whispering about the Twitter thing, but wasn't on the platform at the time, so I have no real opinion on that.

  9. Wow, you read all 16 PLL books! That's impressive cause I was barely able to make it through book 1.

  10. Haha no I could only get to book 11, but that was enough for me!

  11. Absolutely agree with Hate to Love romance! Not only is it annoying, it's volatile and childish.

  12. You know, I actually read books 1-3 of Twilight and gave up halfway through book 4. I know it's a little mind-blowing that I'd dedicate so much time to a series just to give up right before the end but... I just couldn't anymore.

    Here are my Top Ten!

  15. I still love my adult books! I felt the same way with you about Twilight too. As for tropes, I love "Hate to Love", but then again I'm a sucker for any romance if done right. As for tattooed heroes, that depends on how many tattoos. I don't like it when they have a lot of piercings too.

  16. if you wanna try new adult you should read addicted series by k.b ritchie! it's really good, i promise you. and i agree, the love to hate relationships needs to stop right now i just cant stop rolling my eyes at it. ive never tried adult books either. im technically an adult now but i refuse to read adult books because maybe it'll make me feel more of an actual adult and i don't wanna grow up yet lol.
