Top Ten Tuesday- Top Ten Characters Everybody Loves But I Didn't "Get"

Top Ten Tuesday is a really cool original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and The Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten List that bloggers join in on answering... and today (March 8th) I'm one of them :)

Today's Topic

Top Ten Characters Everybody Loves, But I Just Don't Get

  • So some of the characters on this list are from books I absolutely LOVE.  Just because I don't click with a character doesn't mean I can't super enjoy the book.  Also, just because I don't "GET" them, doesn't mean I don't have empathy for their situations or whatever.  Basically, I don't hate these people, they make me feel some type of way.

1.  Blue-- The Raven Boys series by Maggie Stiefvater

  • Seriously, I do like Blue!!  But she's easily my least favorite character in the series.  I don't "get" her a lot of the time.  She comes off a little too harsh sometimes-- like once she makes up her mind about somebody or something, that's it, there's no changing it.

2.  Jam-- Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer

  • Before I read this book, I heard SO many good things!!  But when I picked it up, I was very surprised how much I was not feeling Jam.  She was so self-absorbed.  All her friendships and relationships were all about her.  I never felt like she stopped to try to know anyone.  Also, the big twist made me really angry at her, and I don't think I'm over it yet.

3.  Snape-- Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

  • Okay, hear me out!!  Snape to me was a great character for Harry to butt heads with.  But when all was revealed about Snape, it's like he was supposed to become this "hero" in one instant.  I just CAN'T.  There were 7 books building up Snape as a bad-guy and 1 single act or revelation isn't going to change my opinion.  He played the Dark Side a little too well for that.  I swear he liked it.  (Also, I didn't get the whole Severus middle name thing... I mean, after ALL he did??).  Maybe I just didn't "get" it.

4.  Alaska-- Looking for Alaska by John Green

  • I loved Miles, but I never really understood Alaska 100%.  I think that's intentional, as she is sort of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, but it made it hard to really get to KNOW her.  I did LOVE & totally recommend this book though!!

5.  Lillian-- Burn for Burn series by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

  • I don't dislike Lillian, but it did annoy me that everyone was falling all over themselves being in love with her.  She came off spoiled and selfish at times.  Basically, I just didn't get what was SO irresistible about her to so many.

6.  Mara Dyer-- The Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin

  • As the series progressed, I liked Mara less and less.  When the big reveal came around, I was so disappointed.  I was even more disappointed by Mara's final choice.  I thought it was crazy-selfish and gross.

7.  Cress-- The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer

  • I don't know!!!  I just don't care for Cress :(  She's always blushing and being clumsy and she's a bit of a stalker.  I get that she's been isolated for most of her life, so I try to cut her slack... but I just think she's always going to be my least fav character in the series.

8.  Laurel-- Love Letters To the Dead by Ava Dellaira

  • I know Laurel had been through a lot, but she just didn't feel like a real person to me.  She was always mimicking her sister or her friends to the point where she had zero identity of her own.  And her VOICE in the book drove me nuts.

9.  Callie-- Where the Stars Still Shine by Trish Doller

  • Ughhh Callie!!!  She was SO frustrating.  She kept making the same mistakes over and over and over.  She always ran away from all her problems and somehow everyone else made it right for her.

10.  Lily-- Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn

  • I just could NOT with this girl.  She was so whiney and painfully naive.  I had to resort to skimming a lot of her parts.

This list definitely has an array of feelings.  Some of it is minor- we just didn't click stuff.  Some of it is- You frustrate me to no end stuff :)

What characters made your list??

  1. I've heard quite a few people that didn't really care for Alaska. I haven't read it yet though, I need to.

Mara can also be pretty annoying. I only read the first book, but even in it there were times she just frustrated me.

I love Snape, I do.. but I get the lack of love to. He played bad so well. But, I feel like we missed the love because we see the books from Harry's point of view, and Harry was determined to see him as evil. I think the final act kind of removed the evil colored glasses Harry was wearing and allowed him to reflect back on all their interaction differently.

    1. Mara doesn't get any better. I thought her best was book 1.

  2. I'm with you on Blue. I'm totally in it for the Raven Boys<3 And as soon as I saw the cover of HP I knew you were going to say Snape! He is pretty mean and I don't feel like he was completely redeemed ever.

    1. Totally in it for the BOYS!!! There definitely needed to be more for me with Snape than the whole Always thing and a patronus.

    1. I hope you like her better than I did. I actually did like the book, but I had issues with the MC.

  5. Cress was one of my favorite characters in The Lunar Chronicles. I related to her character a lot. I also rather like Blue, but she does get lost among all the other interesting character in the series. We do both have Snape on our lists though. :)

    1. Yeah it's definitely not that I dislike Blue... I guess it's just that she's my least fave.

  6. Snape really does play the bad guy very well, so I totally understand what you mean.

  7. I like Snape for very different reasons. I agree, he was a great antagonist because he was more dubious than a lot of the other villains of this series. I saw him as bit of an opportunist and making him into a tragic hero is not why I enjoy him.

I'll let Blue slide because she is my least favorite character in the series too but Cress? CRESS!?!? She's my favorite of the TLC ladies.

    1. Yes I could do without the tragic hero. I wasn't even 100% sold on whether he would have came over the good side when the battle for Hogwarts was on. I don't care who he was in love with... I never bought him as the hero. And I'm sorry about Cress... but she sucks. LOLOLOL, just kidding!!!!!!!!

  8. I've heard a lot of iffy things about Looking for Alaska and I doubt I'll ever pick that book up. I've only read The Raven Boys and I'm not sure if I'll read anymore, I mean it was ok, but I wasn't in love with it like everyone else seems to be.

  9. Snape has never been a favorite character of mine but I love his character for the story, you know what I mean? I found him fascinating even though he was still a bully. But I'm 100% with you on the middle name thing. You couldn't have picked something else?! Aww I have a soft spot for Cress but I'm not as into Scarlet as everyone else. I like her but not with the fervor other TLC fans seem to have.

    1. I don't really love Scarlet either. She's just kind of there for Wolf.

  11. I feel you on Snape. I know that he made a great sacrifice, but that doesn't erase all the times he was awful to Harry. Nice list!

  12. Snape is actual human garbage.

Alaska almost made my list too. She was just so self-absorbed.

I need to finish the Mara Dyer series but I'm so afraid because people seem to be hating her because of stuff she did in book 3 and I don't want toooooo

  14. okay snape i understand. I didn't get it either. lillian for sure, blue for sure, alaska for sure for sure. I did like cress though. I thought she was funny and sweet and smart and I loved her relationship with carswell. So that is the only one i don't really agree with you on. Funny how so many of use have different takes on characters

    1. I LOVE this topic because of that. So many characters I love on people's hate list and vice versa. It's SO interesting!!!

  15. OMG your explanation for Laurel from Love Letters to the Dead is EXACTLY why I didn't really enjoy that book at all. I also essentially agree about Blue - I like the Raven BOYS much more than her haha.

  16. I agree with Blue from The Raven Boys series. While I enjoyed her character, I absolutely adore all of the other characters in the series, especially Gansey! Great post, really makes you think about some of the extremely well-loved characters. xx
