Top Ten Tuesday-- The Struggle

Top Ten Tuesday is a really cool original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and The Bookish. Each week they post a new Top Ten List that bloggers join in on answering... and today (September 5th) I'm one of them :)

Today's Topic

Top Ten Books I STRUGGLED With

  • All of these books were ones that I thought I would like but UGHHHH-- they became a chore to read for various reasons.

1.  This is How it Happened by Paula Stokes

  • I was thinking this would be a ME book-- but it really wasn't.  I didn't like the main character and I didn't FEEL from her what I expected.  It was a major let-down.

2.  Stealing Snow (#1) by Danielle Paige

  • This was a retelling that I was really looking forward to and..... it was SO hard for me to get through it.  I had to set it aside because the world building was so terrible and the main girl was boy-crazy and annoying.

3.  How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather

  • I didn't think the writing was very good in this one, so it was tough right off the bat-- but THEN there is a ghost-romance and I was OUT.

4.  The Girls by Emma Cline

  • How could I not like a book based on the Manson Family???  Well, if it's weird and slow and full of flowery writing, I guess that will do it.

5.  The Outliers (#1) by Kimberly McCreight

  • I really liked this author's previous Adult books, so when I found out she was writing YA, I was PUMPED.  But this book DRAGGED.

6.  Anything to Have You by Paige Harrison

  • This book was already getting tough to finish AND THEN it decided to start all over from the beginning through a different character's perspective.  Like, no thanks-- I was bored enough the first time through.

7.  Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone by Kat Rosenfeld

  • This book is about nothing but adjectives.

8.  Perfect Fifths (Jessica Darling #5) by Megan McCafferty

  • I loved this series and then THIS happened.  There was A LOT of skimming involved in me being able to finish this book.

9.  If I Stay by Gayle Forman

  • I know, I'm a robot-- but I just didn't get into this book.

10.  Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetti

  • I read this before I was blogging, so I didn't know anything about the hype surrounding it.  I just picked it up on a whim at the library because I liked the Poppy flower on the cover.  And then I just did NOT get it.  It was SO confusing.  The whole time I was like: TELL ME WHAT IS GOING ON AND WHO THESE 20 CHARACTERS ARE!!!

What books gave you a hard time??  Have you read any on my list??

  1. If I Stay I've wondered about... and This Is How It Happened seems like I saw another review somewhere that kinda said the same thing.

  2. Hi! I couldn't get into If I Stay either. I hate when I'm loving a series and then I stumble with one of the books. And it's always a letdown when I can't connect with or I don't like the main character. Lots of the same thoughts as you this week! :)

  3. The Outliers so dragged. I liked it... kind of but I won't be going forward with the series. I liked her adult books too. Great list!

  4. Stealing Snow is one that I was really excited for at first too...and then I started seeing all of the not-so-positive reviews and decided against reading it. lol! I've heard a few people say they thought she was really boy crazy and annoying. Great list!

  5. I needed a lot of help with Jellicoe Road as it is so confusing. I ended up liking it a lot, but that was after looking up a lot of info online about it.

  6. So many of these books are on my TBR! Currently, I'm reading Into the Water and almost DNF'd it at about 17 pages in. Now, at about 100 pages, I'm starting to like it. Kind of.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks!

  7. I haven't read any of the novels on your list this week... I will probably skip on reading them as well as you seem spot on with your reviews.

  8. I felt the same way about How To Hang A Witch! I was so excited about it but ended up disappointed. I haven't read Stealing Snow but I saw a few people call out the boy-crazy and annoying main character so it's already a no for me :)

  9. I quite enjoyed If I Stay but, unusually for me, I actually liked the film adaptation a lot more. I'm sorry to hear you didn't like The Girls! I've been interested in checking that one out but I've seen it on a few lists this week.

  10. I don't know how I would feel about a ghost romance... and a book that starts over in the middle but from a different pov... what is even the point of that?! I'm sorry these were all a let down!

  11. Stealing Snow gave me a hard time too!

  12. I get what you mean with If I Stay, it took me a while to get into it, but I eventually ended up really enjoying the premise and finishing the last half quite quickly! Sometimes it's difficult to know when to persevere with books, and when to leave them be!

  13. Admittedly Jellicoe Road can be a little confusing because there are so many characters, but I just love it so much. I think it's a great story. Then again, it's one of those books I need to read again (I also read it before I started blogging back in like 2007!)

  14. This made me chuckle. I actually liked, maybe even liked some of the books on your list, but you can't connect with every book out there. I have decided that me and Paige don't click. Too angsty for me, maybe.

  15. I've seen Stealing Snow on a lot of lists today!
I enjoyed How to Hang a Witch. I'm glad you ended up enjoying it =)
Thank you so much for stopping at my blog earlier today.

  16. I haven't read any of these, so maybe I should stay clear of them?

The only one I can remember hearing about is "If I Stay" and only because it's a movie.

  17. I really liked This Is How It Happened, but it did start a bit slow for me. I liked If I Stay but mostly because it was good for a cathartic cry? And I gave up on Stealing Snow and How to Hang a Witch based on... I don't even know, the synopses and the back cover? So hey, at least you tried ;)

  18. It's funny how there are certain story elements that just can not even be dealt with - Ghost Romance - OUT, lol!I've not read any of these and now don't think I need to!

  19. I didn't get through If I Stay so I never got to see what the big deal was. I may give it another try someday, but at the minute it's just not interesting me.

  20. I did not enjoy How to Hang a Witch. It's such a shame because I love witch books, but what a disappointing read.
