Mood Reading Strikes Again: I've been reading Adult Mystery/Thrillers and Liking Them????

The life of a mood reader is tough.  I want to read so many books that people recommend to me, but my brain won't let me!!!  Like-- Fairy Tale retellings, and light Fantasy, and Magical Realism, and Cutesy Romances.  But my brain says: YOU MUST READ THIS CERTAIN GENRE OR I WON'T LET YOU BE INTERESTED IN IT.  And not only that, but lately it's been saying: YOU WILL READ ADULT MYSTERY/THRILLERS AND LIKE THEM!!!

I've never been much of an Adult reader.

I've read some Jodi Picoult, some Emily Giffin, some Sophie Kinsella, all of Gillian Flynn, and some Stephen King, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, and that's about it.  I went through a whole bookish identity crisis when I was in college because I thought once I became an adult, I should read Adult books.  Obviously, it didn't work out, and I thought I didn't like reading as much anymore-- but really I just wasn't reading the right books.  Once I ventured back into the YA section (and found out that it had EXPLODED with popularity during my "lost years"), I found my real reading place.

So color me surprised when lately I want to read Adult books.  What's up with that??

Here's the TBR I've been making:

The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager
  • Ummm, YES!!!  I LOVED Final Girls last year, and we're touring this book in my blog tour co., so YES!!

The Missing by C.L. Taylor
  • It had me at "for fans of Reconstructing Amelia".

Emma in the Night by Wendy Walker
  • Missing sisters and messed-up families.

Follow Me Down by Sherri Smith
  • A missing twin bro, who also may have been having relations with one of his students-- who happens to be found dead.  This sounds SUPER twisty.

When She Was Bad by Tammy Cohen
  • A multi-POV murder-at-work book.

All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda
  • I'm actually reading this now.  I LOVE Megan Miranda, so I know I'll like it.

Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll
  • I saw this on a shelf at Target and thought "I like books with people who have secrets".

Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent
  • I think this has the most potential of any of these books to completely mess with my head.

And Basically THIS whole page.  I want to read them all-- at this moment anyway.

Let's Talk:
Do you read Adult books?  Which ones would you rec for me??

  1. Oh, I love adult books, especially mysteries/thrillers. I still need to read All the Missing Girls. Unraveling Oliver is an intriguing one for sure! I liked the different point of views - you get a complete look at Oliver that way, I think.

    1. I just finished Unraveling Oliver in one night!! It was so different from anything I've read in a LONG time, that I just couldn't put it down. All the Missing Girls was good too. I liked the way the story was told-- very creative plot style!

    1. LOL!!! I've been known to do that as well-- but this time, I am actually reading them (it also might be the only thing I'm reading right now, because I'm in a MAJOR reading slump).

  3. I also get on reading kicks with certain genres! Lately, it's been adult literary fiction for me. I used to really love adult thrillers, though! You need to read Clare Mackintosh's books, if you haven't already! She writes some of my favorite thrillers.

  4. My favorite adult thrillers are a spy series by Daniel Silva; they're like reading Bourne books but with an Israeli spy/art restorer at the center so there's always an art history component too which I like! They're so tense and fast paced. Otherwise most of the adult books I read are historical fiction and the occasional rom com.

  5. I've been loving thrillers lately! For a while actually... there have been so many good ones that have come out. I thought Emma in the Night was pretty good! I need to get some Megan Miranda too, I've only read one of hers. Lisa Jewell's recent stuff isn't bad.

    1. Good to know about Emma in the Night-- I might have you to blame for this mood!! Your blog always has cool looking Thrillers on it!

  6. I do mix it up with my age range. I will mostly read adult contemporary romances, but will also check books out from the library if I am seeing a lot of buzz about them. That is what got me reading all the Liane Morarity books (I would love a new one, please), Clare Mackintosh, and all the "girl" books - Girl on the Train, Gone Girl, Luckiest Girl Alive. It seems I read a bit of adult thrillers as well.

    1. I haven't read an Adult Contemporary Romance in FOREVER!!! I read the Morarity books based on buzz too-- and I can't wait for more!! I don't know where this phase came from, but I can't control my book brain!!

  7. I have been more interested in adult books lately than I used to be too. Not sure why, but... same. I went through that same thing where I thought because I was an adult in respect to age, I had to ONLY read adult books hah. Glad we're done with that! But I don't have a ton of recommendations because I can't seem to find any myself? And the ones I have found have been mainly sci-fi, which I don't think you'd be super excited for haha. I hope you like these though, I want to read a few of them too- especially All the Missing Girls and Emma in the Night!

    1. SO glad we are done with that!! YA forever-- even though right now my book brain tells me I must read Adult Thrillers.. I know it'll be short lived. YA is my jam. Emma in the Night might be my next read-- since I wrote this post, a lot of people have told me to try it!
