The Future of Us By Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler- Friday Rewind

Friday Rewind is an idea I got from Before The Blog which is/was a feature hosted by YA Litwit... and is super cool! The whole idea is that we've all been reading a lot longer than we've been blogging, so why not pull out one of those old books and feature it?? It's a way to rediscover books from our past...
(I'm calling it Friday Rewind now because I don't think this feature is active anymore)

Go to YA Litwit and check it out!

I decided I'm going to do this on Fridays :)
My Choice this week is:
The Future of Us
By: Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler

  • Why did you choose this book? I chose this book because I want Jay Asher to write another book!!  2 weren't enough!  Also because this book is set in the 90's... flashback!!!
  • When did you read this book? December '11
  • Who would you recommend this book to? I recommend this to anyone who liked Jay Asher's first book (13 Reasons Why) even though it is has COMPLETELY different subject matter.  It's lighter, but still amazing.

  • Goodreads Synopsis:
It's 1996, and Josh and Emma have been neighbors their whole lives. They've been best friends almost as long - at least, up until last November, when Josh did something that changed everything. Things have been weird between them ever since, but when Josh's family gets a free AOL CD in the mail, his mom makes him bring it over so that Emma can install it on her new computer. When they sign on, they're automatically logged onto their Facebook pages. But Facebook hasn't been invented yet. And they're looking at themselves fifteen years in the future.

By refreshing their pages, they learn that making different decisions now will affect the outcome of their lives later. And as they grapple with the ups and downs of what their futures hold, they're forced to confront what they're doing right - and wrong - in the present.

    My Thoughts:
First of all this book was written in alternating POV chapters, which I am OBSESSED with!  I don't know why, but I just like getting to know other characters' thoughts.  But on to the book itself... it was great!  I loved that it was based in the 90's where they had dial-up, watched Seinfeld & Wayne's World, and listened to Green Day & Dave Matthews.  The 90's were an awesome time for pop-culture.
The premise of this book is great.... let's see what happens if someone views their Facebook profile 15 years in the future.  It was funny to see their reactions to it!  I love how people today think "wow how did we ever live without Facebook?"... and I like Facebook and all, but I assure you we could all live just fine without it.  Tell me what purpose it actually serves again?? (and no getting dirt and gossip doesn't count).  Okay, but I got off topic!!  Anyway, I found it funny how the kids react to seeing their future selves display all their private thoughts.  Cool idea!  I think it could've went even further, but once they started changing the future by all their actions, I'm sure it made more sense to go down the path it went.
The plot moved really quickly and towards the end it just flew by!  I wish it maybe would've been 50 pages longer.  I loved the romantic tension between Emma and Josh.  It was nice to see the good guy get some props.... even though Emma didn't really deserve him.
I was left a little confused with the side story of Kellan and Tyson.  It seemed like their story was never fully finished, so I wished I knew how that ended up.
Overall:  I really liked it!!  Read it!!
