Top Ten Tuesday- Covers I Would Redesign

Top Ten Tuesday is a really cool original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and The Bookish.  Each week they post a new Top Ten List that bloggers join in on answering... and today (November 12th), I'm one of them :)

Today's Topic

Top Ten Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

Wow it really feels like I've been talking about book covers A LOT lately.  I didn't realize this was going to be the topic for this week and then I basically did a very similar thing in my Reviewers' Roundtable Discussion Post.  Oh well, I still like this topic so I'm going to share with those of you who haven't read my other post, plus I added a few more :)

  • 1.  Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty- I had NO idea that this was a YA book for years and years.  I had seen it around, but just always assumed it was chick-lit because of the cover.  This cover does not say "teen" to me at all... and it doesn't do the awesomeness of Jessica Darling justice.
  • 2.  Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson- I love Laurie Halse Anderson.  And I loved this book... but what is up with this cover??  There is nothing supernatural about the book, so I really have no idea how an "all seeing eye" type thing is relevant.  Oh yeah and it's ugly.
  • 3.  Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead- Awkward pose of the model + she looks too much like Angelina Jolie in her younger days.  Everytime I see this I think Laura Croft.
  • 4.  If I Stay by Gayle Forman- Wait what??  I don't get it.
  • 5.  Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor- For a fantasy book, I'm just not feeling it.  There are SO many cool covers out there and this is just not one of them.
  • 6.  Lair of Dreams (The Diviners #2) by Libba Bray- This is not out yet, and I hate it.  The Diviners is such a cool book... and this just looks like late 80's/early 90's style covers.
  • 7.  Deadly Little Secret by Laurie Faria Stolarz- This is just too bland for me.  The only thing I like is the little scripty boxy thing that the title is in, that's pretty.
  • 8.  You Have Seven New Messages by Stewart Lewis- So it's about dealing with grief and I get that from the cover... but I think it could be a little more creative than a girl looking out a window.
  • 9.  Sever (The Chemical Garden #3) by Lauren DeStefano- I liked the first 2 covers in this series, but what the heck is with the green??  It looks like she was taking the photograph on a green-screen like they do in the movies so they can replace the background with something, but then they just forgot?  I also don't like this cover model as well because she seems WAY younger than the first 2.  And her posture... is she at finishing school or something?

  • 10.  ALL OF THESE- Ughhhh are these not SO beyond played out??

So these are the books I would want redone.  Some of them have been changed for the paperbacks (like If I Stay), thank GOD.  But still something has to be done about that almost kiss.

  1. I dislike most of Richelle Mead's series covers, I don't like the weird close up of faces. I actually really like the hardcover edition of If I Stay, I think it's the blue, I'm a sucker for my favourite colour! Haha I totally agree with the almost kiss covers, they're terrible. ><

  2. Hahaha the dreaded almost kiss. I'm getting tired of it too. I'm tired of it, especially in conjunction with a punny title. I like the If I Stay redesign. I totally prefer the new cover, it's haunting, or maybe it just seems that way because I know what happens.

  3. Ooh, I actually really like some of these--IF I STAY, SEVER, DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONE. But seriously, why does LAIR OF DREAMS even have the cover after the divineness that was THE DIVINERS? And ha, the almost kiss!

  4. I love that you've put the dreaded almost kiss. This cover is so overdone!

  5. Oh, goodness, the almost-kiss! It's especially prominent with NA nowadays, and it's almost like publishers feel like their covers MUST include it. I hate it, because it makes all the books blend together, and makes me not want to read any of them.

Also, I agree about Sever. There was just WAY too much green going on there.

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!

  6. I like a few, Sever, Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Dirty Little Secret. The rest so agree on. I also hate the dreaded almost kiss. Its been so over done. Nice list.

  7. I like the other version of If I Stay better with the girl on the cover. The blue one I am not a fan of at all.

  8. Hahaha - the "almost" kiss. You're so right - it is way overdone. Great list!

  9. That dreaded almost kiss! Definitely. I dislike covers with kissing couples or people's faces. I don't know why. :o

  10. Vampire Academy is definitely one of the popular choices today. Covers for this series are definitely generic and could have been designed better.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone - this cover is so ugly to me I can't force myself to read the book yet although a lot of friends recommended it to me. Just yuck!
I like those almost kiss covers. Yes it is overused topic but they are cute. :)

Nice list. Thanks for stopping by my TTT. ;)

  11. I agree with Catalyst, If I Stay and Vampire Academy, and all the almost-kisses except for Ten Things We Did. I actually like that cover :)

    1. I actually sort of like The Ten Things We Did cover too... I think it's the pink :) And that I freaking LOVE that book!

  12. I'm so with you on Vampire Academy/Bloodlines. I love both series, but I've never thought the covers did them justice. SO GLAD you agree she looks like Angelina Jolie. I've thought that since the first time I saw the cover. I put Daughter of Smoke & Bone on my list as well. What do you think of the actual redesign for If I Stay? One came out a couple years ago. Great list!

    1. I like the redesign of If I Stay. It's not my favorite of all-time or anything, but it's much better than a stick tree.

  13. I agree with If I Stay, that original cover isn't great and I think the redesign is even worse. And yes x1000 to the kissing covers. The Going Too Far cover has always really freaked me out. Something with his lips above her eyebrow and her really sad eyes.

  14. Hahaha! I love the "Almost Kiss" Category. I agree, those books are definitely ugh! I like romance a lot, but why are the covers so cheesy all the time?

Anyway, I hate the cover for Catalyst. I haven't read it, but I get were it seems misleading. But also, it looks so outdated!

  15. Haha I also thought Vamp Acad girl looks like young Angelina Jolie, I was thinking more Girl Interrupted because of the crazy smile! If I Stay had a much better cover here, I prefer it a lot more to the one you got. My TTT.

  16. The almost kiss covers, you see a LOT of them around lately, they need to start thinking up new designs! I also agree with the Sloppy Firsts cover, if I saw it at someone's house or the library I would not think it was a teenage book at all!

    Great post! :)

  17. I actually love the If I Stay cover!!!! Although it is not exactly related to the story, maybe they are getting at that one last flower that wants to stay but it might fall off of the tree... I get where you are coming from that it is a bit confusing. The colors are very nice, though.

  20. LOL YES!! That almost kiss is such an over played image and just makes me cringe. There are loads better ways to bring out the romantic side of a book without the almost kiss.

  21. haha... gotta love the dreaded "almost kiss"..... it kills me too. Also--- yeah.... VAMPIRE ACADEMY! I am obsessed with that series and can't understand how they could do that to such amazing books!!! All 6 of them are horrible.... the Bloodlines series isn't much better-- at least they improved the font and added some design, but geeze. Lose the cheesy models.

  22. Ohohoh... I LOVE the Laini Taylor covers! They are some of my favorites. But I am so with you on the "almost kiss" covers. I suppose there's a segment of the audience who loves these covers; not me, though.

I haven't seen that Catalyst cover before. It looks like a low-rent version of Mafi's covers.
