My Fave Underrated Movies--From the 2000's

A while ago I wrote a post about my favorite underrated 80's movies, and I followed it up with a post on my favorite underrated 90's movies.  I love being nostalgic so much that I decided to now share with you my favorite movies from the 2000's decade (mostly the early part of it).

So here you have it--- My favorite movies from the years where low-rise flared jeans, body glitter, tube tops, trucker hats, velour tracksuits, and Abercrombie & Fitch were the bomb.

Movies from the 2000's that you just gotta see:

Slackers- Devon Sawa and pals are professionally cheating their way through college... until Ethan (the campus weirdo and super-stalker) finds out and blackmails them into helping him win over a pretty girl.
  • Starring: Devon Sawa, Jaime King, Jason Segel
  • Cool Factor: Dude from Pete & Pete is on it, plus the scariest hair-doll I've ever seen
Tomcats- A crew of friends make a bet where the last bachelor standing gets a ton of cash.  After a disastrous casino incident Michael has to get his douchey friend Kyle to get married so he can fix his life.
  • Starring: Jerry O'Connell, Shannon Elizabeth
  • Cool Factor: Some really gross humor, Jerry O'Connell in his prime
Whatever it Takes- A remake of Cyrano de Bergerac finds Ryan crushing on the most popular girl in school.  Popular guy Chris has his eye on Ryan's best friend Maggie-- so the 2 strike a deal to help each other get girls that normally would never like them.
  • Starring: Shane West, James Franko
  • Cool Factor: It's GIA from Full House!!  Plus, Aaron Paul plays a weirdo/stoner dude.
Roadtrip- When Josh hooks up with Beth, they make an illicit tape--- problem is, he accidentally mails it to his long-time girlfriend.  Now he embarks on a road trip from Ithaca, Ny to Austin, TX to stop Tiffany from seeing the tape.
  • Starring: Breckin Meyer, Seann William Scott, Amy Smart
  • Cool Factor: Oh jeez there are SO many!!!  Tom Green (remember him??) at the peak of his weirdness (and probably the only truly funny part he ever played), remember geeky DJ Qualls??  This is where he got his start. "It's not cheating if you're in a different area code"  (PS-- this is coming to Netflix in September!! So if you haven't seen it, be on the lookout!!)

Out Cold- I might be the only person who knows about this movie, but OMG LOVED!!!  It's about an indie ski resort that's about to get bought by a big corporation... this does not go over well with the kooky staff.
  • Starring: Jason London, Zach Galifianakis
  • Cool Factor: Many LOL moments, "Island in the Sun" by Weezer, pants-less skiing is a thing that happens often.
Van Wilder- This movie is so "me" it's not even funny.  Van Wilder is a college legend-- and he still hasn't graduated in 7 years.  When his dad cuts him off, he starts a "party liaison" business to pay for his classes, and issues with the dean force him to finally try to graduate.
  • Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Tara Reid, Kal Penn
  • Cool Factor: Ryan freaking Reynolds.  "Write that down", the nastiest dog semen scene in cinematic history, Aaron Paul playing a random wasted guy again, so many quotable lines.
Eurotrip- Scotty is publicly dumped by his girlfriend and thinking his German pen pal is a guy, tells him off for hitting on him.  Then he finds out Mike is really Mieke, a beautiful girl who "gets" him like no one else does.  So Scott and his 3 best friends go backpacking across Europe to find Mieke and make things right.
  • Starring: Scott Mechlowciz, Michelle Trachtenberg
  • Cool Factor: The Worst Twins in the history of twins, "Scotty Doesn't Know", Absinthe scene.
Old School- This might be my favorite movie forever.  Forever ever.  I probably quote it daily ("Maybe Bed Bath and Beyond.  I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.", "We're going streaking!", "You're crazy, man.  I like you, but you're crazy." "Earmuffs") When Mitch gets cheated on, he gets a house close to a college campus.  When his friends discover this, they decide to open a fraternity of misfits.
  • Starring: Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn
  • Cool Factor: What's not cool about this movie??  "You're my boy Blue", Will Ferrell's wedding song, Jeremy Piven playing the most annoying dean ever (Cheeeeese!), Earmuffs, & Stifler makes an appearance.

Juno- A super mature 16-year-old gets pregnant by her best friend and decides to give the baby up for adoption.
  • Starring: Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner
  • Cool Factor: Breakout roles for both Ellen Page and Michael Cera, awesome soundtrack, track boys in insanely short shorts.
Adventureland- A recent college grad takes a summer job at a local amusement park when he can't find anything better.
  • Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds
  • Cool Factor: Filmed in Pittsburgh at KENNYWOOD (the coolest old-school amusement park around), a 1980's setting!!
500 Days of Summer- When Tom and Summer break up, he reflects on everything that's happened in their relationship.
  • Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Chloe Grace Moretz
  • Cool Factor: Any movie with JGL is cool in my book (except Don Jon, BLAH!!), I love that it's the GIRL who can't commit, a song and dance sequence.
The Rules of Attraction- Oh man this movie is crazy!!  Camden College is home to partying, drug-using students... one is Sean Bateman (brother of THE infamous Wall Street broker).
  • Starring: James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, Kate Bosworth
  • Cool Factor: Dawson playing a very UN-Dawson-like character (and Jessica Biel being very UN-Mary-like as well), zero likable characters, Sex, Drugs, & College Parties :)

Frequency- This is one of my all-time favs.  A HAM radio connects a father and son  across 30 years in NY.
  • Starring: Jim Caviezel, Dennis Quaid
  • Cool Factor: A serial killer murder/mystery, BASEBALL, Dennis Quaid isn't completely terrible as an actor
AntiTrust- When computer programming genius Milo graduates from college, NURV (a Microsoft type company) comes calling.  It's a dream job, but Milo is more of a open-source kind of dude.  As the launch date for NURV's new global communication system approaches, sinister things start happening.  Has Milo gotten in over his head here?
  • Starring: Ryan Phillipe, Rachel Leigh Cook, Claire Forlani
  • Cool Factor: Computer geeks!!  The end of the Ryan Phillipe, Rachel Leigh Cook era :(
The Prestige- There aren't words for how much I love this movie.  In the late 1800's two rival magicians try to out-do each other.
  • Starring: Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale
  • Cool Factor: Magic!!  Tesla!!  A twist that I didn't even come close to guessing.
Unbreakable- When a man is the sole survivor of a train accident, a man in a wheelchair tells him that he's a real-life comic book superhero.
  • Starring: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson
  • Cool Factor: Another M. Night Shyamalan masterpiece.  Beautiful cinematography.  Comic books.

Valentine- A horror/thriller about a killer exacting revenge on his high school tormentors.
  • Starring: Denise Richards, David Boreanaz, Katherine Heigl
  • Cool Factor: We all need a little cheesy slasher film in our lives, and this was one of my favorites.
The In Crowd- When Adrien falls in with a rich crowd while working at a country club, all seems perfect.... until people start dying.
  • Starring: Lori Heuring, Susan Ward
  • Cool Factor: Rufus Humfrey (from Gossip Girl) is the crush-worthy guy.
Gossip3 college students decide to start a rumor & track the way it travels around campus.  The problem is the rumor goes dark & dangerous.
  • Starring: James Marsden, Lena Headey, Norman Reedus
  • Cool Factor: Ummm-- Joshua Jackson!!!
Swimfan- When the new girl gets hung up on the star swimmer (who has a serious girlfriend), she seduces him and then goes all scary stalker-chick.
  • Starring: Erika Christensen, Jesse Bradford
  • Cool Factor: I stand by my assertion that Erika Christensen plays the scariest/creepiest stalker.

Butterfly Effect- An interesting time-bending movie about a boy who has suffered from blackouts for most of his life and finds when he reads a childhood journal he can go back and change past events.
  • Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart
  • Cool Factor: Flashback 80's scenes & Ashton Kutcher is in an actual serious movie!
The Mothman Prophecies- When a reporter investigates strange happenings in Point Pleasant, WV, he learns of people seeing a strange moth-creature--- which just happens to be what his wife was drawing before she died 2 years ago.
  • Starring: Richard Gere, David Eisenberg, Laura Linney
  • Cool Factor: This movie was filmed in Pittsburgh and Kittanning, PA and a few of my college friends were extras.
What Lies Beneath- A university research scientist's wife is in a car accident and starts hearing voices and seeing a face.  Is she losing her mind or is there really something supernatural in her house?
  • Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford
  • Cool Factor: Ouija board!!
Gothika- A psychiatrist finds herself accused of killing her husband and is committed to the asylum where she once was a doctor.  She has no memory of what she did, so what is the truth?
  • Starring: Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr., Penelope Cruz
  • Cool Factor: LOVE this psychological thriller... totally messed with my head!

A Walk to Remember- When the popular guy goes down for a prank-gone-wrong, his punishment is to be in the school play... which leads him to start hanging out & falling for the preacher's daughter.  The thing is-- she has a heart-breaking secret.
  • Starring: Shane West, Mandy Moore
  • Cool Factor: It's a Nicholas Sparks book & a total sobfest.  Poetry!!  The movie was filmed in the same town as Dawson's Creek.
Traffic- A drama about America's War on Drugs told through 4 different perspectives.
  • Starring: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas, Benicio Del Toro
  • Cool Factor: Erika Christensen does it again with the OMG character, and I'll never look at plastic toys the same way again.
Where the Heart Is- A very pregnant Novalee is abandoned at a Wal-Mart by her loser boyfriend, has the baby IN the Wal-Mart, and has to build a life for her and her baby in a small town in Oklahoma.
  • Starring: Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd
  • Cool Factor: This one of my fave movies/books of EVER!!  I've probably watched it 999 times.  Also, anytime Sally Field shows up in a movie it's cooler.
Speak- I believe this was originally a Lifetime Movie... and a freaking awesome one!!  A girl starts high school as a social pariah after she busts up a party over the summer.
  • Starring: Kristen Stewart, Elizabeth Perkins, Michael Angarano
  • Cool Factor: This is a movie made from one of my fave books EVER!!  Reading Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson changed my life.  Also, this was Kristen Stewart's breakout role.

My other (more obvious) favorites:
Duets, Bring It On, Wall-E, Gladiator, Almost Famous, Harry Potter movies, X-Men, Mean Girls, Meet the Parents, American Pie 2, The Hangover, Freaky Friday, Legally Blonde, 13 Going On 30, Erin Brockovich, American Psycho, I Am Sam

Tell Me:
What are your favorite movies from the 2000's??  Do you like any of mine? Any I'm missing that I just gotta see?

  10. There are so many great movies on this list (I think I have seen Juno 20x!!! A cousin once got me the script too, knowing how obsessed I was). And The Prestige! There's a bunch on this list I still haven't seen despite being big movies--Road Trip, etc. so I will definitely have to chek these out. I am going to bookmark this for later. Thank you so much for this post, Michelle.

  11. LOVE this list! I am not a huge movie person, but still, some of these are my faves! Juno is one I cannot get enough of! And OMG Scotty Doesn't Know is now currently stuck in my head and will be for months probably, so I am blaming you a LOT right now hahha. I watched Swimfan with some people in college, and we were mostly just mad at all the swimming inaccuracies ;) Love 500 Days of Summer too! Going to cry just thinking about A Walk to Remember. SOBS.

Some of my favorites I think are those above (not Swimfan though bwhaha) and Mean Girls for sure. And 13 Going on 30, that was a great one! And Remember the Titans may be my all time favorite non-bookish movie (fine, second to maybe D2: The Mighty Ducks, but that isn't a 2000s haha) SUCH a fun post!!

    1. Somehow I have NOT seen Get Over It!!! That is SO odd because I feel like I was all about the teen movies in 2001. John Tucker Must Die was kind of cool... mostly bc of the dude from Desperate Housewives being hot :)

Plus Shane West, yum. Bring It On, Gladiator, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Freaky Friday, Wall-E, yes yes yes!! Some of my other 2000s favorites are The Wedding Planner, What A Girl Wants, Coyote Ugly, A Cinderella Story and Get Over It (which is super hilarious and stars Ben Foster and Kiersten Dunst).
