The Thousandth Floor

It's Manhattan, 2118.  We follow 5 teens living in a thousand story building where the higher the floor, the better the life.

Avery- lives in the Penthouse, floor 1,000.  She's been genetically engineered to be "perfect"-- but money can't buy you love, especially when you're in love with your adopted brother.

Leda-  lives in an upper floor and is best friends with Avery.  She had to go to rehab after a broken heart put her drug problem out-of-control.  Now that the heartbreaker has resurfaced, she's determined to figure out why he bailed in the first place.

Rylin- Lives on floor 32 and is struggling to make ends meet for her and her sister.  When Cord, a guy from Avery's circle asks her to clean his house, she finds more than just a job.

Eris- moves from 985 to 103 after a paternity scandal rocks her family.

Watt- Floor 240.  Hacker hired by Leda to track her crush, but also sees a chance to get in with the upper floor crowd.

We follow them for the next 2 months, and then someone falls from the roof of this two and a half mile high building.

I didn't know what I was going to get with this book.  I kept hearing that this was sort of a Gossip Girl/Pretty Little Liars mash-up, and I can see where the comparisons come from-- but I think those comparisons are selling this a little bit short.  This book has teenage drama and multiple POV's, but it also has a really cool futuristic world and more substance than those 2 series.

I was hooked right away with wanting to know ALL about The Tower and these people that live there.  I found it interesting as hell how this huge building was basically a contained city all on its own.  So, the setting was a big plus.

The minus was Avery's story.  Everything was going fine, but then there was this incest story thrown in and I was like "hold up".  Avery is in love with her adopted brother Atlas, who ran away to see the world and has barely been in touch.  Now he's back, and her feelings are stronger than ever.  I'll give her this- she does try to fight her feelings, but once I realized that this storyline wasn't going away, I was a little creeped out.  Sure, they're not BLOOD RELATED, but Avery doesn't really have memories of before Atlas came to live with them.  They were raised brother and sister-- and that's hard for me to get on-board with.

Aside from that, I was super addicted to this cool book.  I love books about teens navigating the social side of life-- and this one covers a lot of issues.  Boyfriends, poverty, friendships, obsessions, commitment issues, drug addiction, etc.


The best part of this book??  It's the first in a series!!!  I hope book 2 brings MORE world building.  I want to know everything about this Tower, the technology, and the stuff leading up to it's creation.  I hope the icky relationship goes away-- I kind of don't think it will, but I can still hope, right??  I hope that new characters are introduced, because we lost a big part of this book!!

OVERALL: I had a lot of fun reading this book.  It wasn't perfect- there's an incest thing that I really wasn't a fan of- but it was entertaining as hell.  I would definitely recommend to people who like YA-- because books like this are the heart of YA.
